Bob our neighbor was just over and they made us try some vegemite, are you going to tell me you eat that? They just got back home after 7 weeks over there he works for a company that sent him and others over there so his wife bought a ticket and went also. They said that was the nicest winter they ever experienced. They did say it was very pricey compared to here. If you eat that I am sure you must have grown up on it then it is probably fine.

Unrelated I know ..... .... But I've been out of contact for three days due to travelling to Brisbane for my older brother's funeral. We were never close and due to a family feud we haven't spoken for eighteen years.

He was just 70 years of age and two days short of his 50th wedding anniversary.

Talking to my sister in law, his death was the result of Alzheimer's Disease, the first symptoms only appearing three months ago!! The stories she told me of his increasingly irrational behavior over the last three months truly amaze me. There is no effective cure.

Makes one realise how temporary life can be!

Yes. Fiscal management isn't one of his strong points. Indeed, does he have any strong points?
During his term the Australian dollar has risen (or the US dollar has dropped) 26%, from US$0.72c to US$0.91 - which is probably the main reason your neighbor found Australia expensive. The US should be exploiting this advantage through increased exports - but the only thing being exported seems to be US jobs!

One can only hope for something better in the future, although the present bunch of hopefuls don't inspire much confidence!

I ate yams when I lived in Papua New Guinea for over 20 years. I'd agree with Paul Hogan!!! :lol:

Yes, that is only partly correct. Entertainment, restaurants etc are more expensive, mainly I think due to our lower population (20 million). A major venue like Seaworld on the Gold Coast probably gets the same number of visitors in six months, as Disneyland in Annaheim gets in one day!!!

Based on what my daughter paid for her house in Houston, housing costs are similar or slightly higher in Australia. But here is the catch - my daughter paid around US$6,000 annual state taxes on her US$250,000 home, whereas I pay only Aus$1,400 annual rates and taxes on my $600,000, five acre home in Brisbane - and even less on my $400,000 home here in the Aussie Outback. House rents here are in general far lower than the USA - you could find a three bed room home for rent in most Aussie cities for around Aus$300 to Aus$350 per week - but rents are rising rapidly as our interest rates are rising (thanks to the US economic crisis!!!)

Gasoline is slightly more expensive here, but only half the price it is in Europe. Fresh food here is similar in cost to the USA.

Health services here are virtually free for all Australians under our national Medicare - unlike the outrageous medical charges in the USA.

For Australian families, I suspect our cost of living is slightly less than the cost of living in the USA, whilst our salaries and wages are rising above US levels for the first time, thanks to a booming economy.
We have no tipping in Australia. Please assure me your neighbor did not try to start that disgusting custom here?

I don't think there was a morning during my school years that a slice of toast, butter and Vegemite was not included in breakfast. And if Mother was short of sandwich fillings - Vegemite sandwiches for lunch.

For those around the world, Vegemite is similar to Bonox, Bovril, Marmite, Promite and a few others I forget. Its great added to soups, stews and mashed potatoes.

If you check here you will find it is no longer Aussie - now owned by the Yanks at Kraft!! :cry:
On a cold night Father used to drink a warm "Dad & Mum" - Bonox and Rum, although in Australia we use Vegemite.

All Aussie kids were raised on Vegemite! According to Mother in my youth:

Grandfather used to put a tea spoon of Vegemite in the gear box and diff of his 1934 Vauxhall car - but I don't recall why! :D

When I grew up in the 1950's, we had an abundance of fresh food in Australia - which was all shipped off to the UK to feed the Poms...who spent all their money paying their WWII debt to the Yanks! Butter, apples, meat, wheat, flour, sugar - all shipped to the UK! We grew our own vegetables, caught fish and rabbits, occasionally kangaroo or deer for meat and had home made bread, home made butter and either home made strawberry jam or Vegemite was always on the menu!

I raised my kids in Papua New Guinea where we could not get fresh western vegetables. The alternate source of an alphabet of vitamins ... was Vegemite!!

My daughter who lives in Houston, TX is in Australia for a week. She called me a short time ago from a shopping center on the Gold Coast where, by coincidence, she is buying ten jars of Vegemite to take back to the US next weekend.

Yup, Aussie kids are Vegemite kids!!!

Looking at the ingredients list, I must say this stuff is probably really good for you. As Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) once said, referring to some sort of "yams": "It tastes like s**t, but you can live on it!
All kidding aside, I think I'll try it as I'm sure I could use the vitamins.

I'm with you.
Vegemite smells like the cats bum and has a thicker consistency than the sluge I'm trying to degrease from the Fergy center axle housing.

Not all of us downunder eat that crap. :wink:
Anyhow, I believe Vegemite is now owned by Kraft USA! So enjoy!! :D
