Tranny Oil

Since Steve has an earlier post about his Tran. oil I have a question. Once water gets into the oil will the oil on the dipstick always look bad or is it possible for the water and oil to seperate after sitting for a while so the good seperated oil is only what shows on the dip stick? Just curious. Thanks Richard

Using the tractor will heat up the oil and generally evaporate off the water. When I first bought my TO-30, the fluid was slightly milky but it is now clear and has remained clear.

I used to have a JD 435 and the fluid used get milky from lack of use and condensation in a humid climate(Western Washington). I put a street "L" pipe fitting in the drain hole and a reducer bushing(3/4 x 1/8 as I recall) and pipe plug in the bushing and used that as a water trap. I would occasionally drain that before start up and remove some of the water and oil/water. I think the oil had an emulsifier in it because some of the water dropped out of suspension but some stayed in suspension. Anyway, it seemed to help some.

Loosen the smallest drain plug slightly and with a clean pan underneath catch a little bit of it and see what it is. If water is in there separately, that"s what should come out first.

It may or may not separate depending on what oil is used and how much water is present. Plain mineral oil without additives will not remain as an emulsion, and will generally separate, given enough time. However, more modern oils use additives that will make emulsions that either do not separate or take a very long time to do so. Jim in OH

When I purchased my MF-65. The oil on the dip stick was clean and nice looking. It had sat for about 5 years. By the time I drove it home it was milky from the water I did not know was in the sumps.

Yes, it can and will seperate, though the time to do this may be excessive.
