I took a pic, and it matches the pic of the Sherman HI/LO (combination) transmission on the Sherman page by Smith (sorry no first name!). Anything I should do to check it out other than run it in every gear?

If you'll look again at the Sherman sight, by John ( I think) Smith, if you'll scroll down you'll see a line that say's "How to rebuild a HI-LO Sherman transmission, click here". It gives you a step by step procedure with pictures on everything to look for. There's also a parts section and installation section. A really great sight. Irv*

Reid, I guess in looking at your post again, its hard to see a transmission in someone elses tractor. I have a Sherman step up in my to-20, and if you coast it in the standard side of third gear, it will pop out of gear. No doubt is has part of its "dentals" worn off in that gear. You might try that on all the gears on the on you're looking at.

Sounds like you found John Smith's website, that's the best I've seen for shermans, etc. Running every gear is fine, but keep in mind that sherman is an extra gearbox that is mounted between the clutch and tranny, so it should work in any tractor gear. The problem I've seen/heard with those shermans is sometimes popping out of gear, or hard to get into gear. Check that by driving and shifting the sherman, your tractor can be in any gear to check that, but 1st or 2nd is probably best.

Gshadel,
You're right, of course. I guess I should have clarified that the Sherman on my TO-20 pops into neutral from standard drive when I coast it down a hill in 4th gear. It does stay in under load, although I don't use mine very much in standard drive. It will always stay in overdrive. Irv*
