Hello,

I am getting ready to install a Pertronix Ignitor on my 51 TO-20. It still has the original dist and is still a 6 volt positive ground system. I got the kit from this site. One question for those who have installed this, how did you get the wires routed out of the distributor? Jut eyeballing it I don't see a place to run the wires out. Any install tips or tricks I should know? Thanks.

Takes 10 minutes to install in the Lucas distributor. Remove and replace the distributor top plate and connect to coil, taking care to ensure polarity is correct. I also purchased the Pertronix high voltage coil.

You are lucky you didn't fry the Igniter! There is a warning that reverse polarity will destroy the unit.

You will be very pleased with the improvement in starting and running.

Pretty neat, I see that the red and black from inside dist. go to + and - on coil.
Where there any other modification?
I assume you just removed the old wiring at these locations?
Just asking for curiosity sakes.
I've been LEANIN""" real hard towards one for my 6 volter. She actually needs a rebuild, but am trying to milk her for another season of rototilling.
Nice pic. Mark

Ok so I figured out how to get the wires out. I went ahead and hooked up the wires from the Pertronix as follows: black/white to coil negative, black to ignition switch wire coming from voltage regulator. It would not fire at all. There is a 3rd wire Pertronix has you hook up from the coil positive to the battery positive or chassis. I hooked that wire up to the bolt that holds the coil to the engine block. When I turn the switch on the wire stands up and sparks/smokes like crazy. Can't figure out what I am doing wrong?
My ignition switch is simply a flip switch on/off with a wire going from the voltage regulator to the switch and a wire going from the coil positive to the switch.

I do not have such a system, however, most 6 volt systems are POSITIVE ground. Is it possible that you have your ground wire incorrect. On most 6 volters, the positive from the coil goes to the side of the distributer.
Would this help?

I forgot to ask, did you specifically request a petronix for a 6 volt positive ground system.?
I believe that they are different than the 12v. pos. ground systems.

Thanks for the help. Yeah I got a system for the 6 volt positive ground. After some fishing around, I had one too many wires hooked up to the negative side of the coil. Once I removed the original wire from the ignition switch to the coil, the system fired and stopped sparking. Glad it was something that simple, yet feel silly missing it.
