Hello, I"m fairly new to the list and have really learned quite a lot from all you folks. Thanks for that! Here"s my problem, I have my TSX 458 carb from my To-30 torn down for a rebuild. I"m planning to do the rebuild tonight. I"m having a real hard time visualizing the 9/32" measurement required to get the float adjusted correctly & I unfortunately don"t have access to a manual at this time. If anyone can enlighten this dim bulb in my head I"d sure appreciate it. Secondly, once I"ve removed the screws from the throttle plate, how do I get the shaft to slide out of the body?

Randy,

The float is adj as Jerry/MT says and an easy way for me is to build a little "tool" which is 9/32 inch "high" so it will slide in between the float and the carb housing. Be sure to include the gasket on the housing when making the measurement.

The choke "disc" on the shaft slides into a slot built in the shaft. It is not obvious and is a different design than the throttle disc installation. So it is "pulled out "of the shaft and be careful as the slot in the shaft can be damaged easily. Not sure you need to remove it anyway during the overhaul unless it is damaged in some way and does not close or open properly.

As I recall, regarding the float setting, you invert the upper housing so that the floats are pressing down on the needle valve. The mesurement is made from the point on the floats that is nearest to the upper housing. If you go into Articles section on the left, there is an article about rebuilding a M-S TSX carb for a N series Ford, It"s the same basic carb and it may help you.

Re: the throttle shaft, you just pull it out. It may come out with the air seals and it"s real important to have the new air seals in when you replace the throttle shaft. A leak around these will lean your mixture and cause operability problems and could lead to burned exhaust valves since lean mixtures lead to reduced charge cooling. Charge cooling is important in these Z Continentals.

Thanks. Somehow I missed that excellent article. Upon further recollection of the tear down last night I recall that it was the choke shaft not the throttle shaft that was being difficult. I don't suppose there is any good reason to take the choke shaft out anyway as long as it's moving fine.
