I will be looking at one locally for sale....asking price $1500 obo. Owner says it has the 4cyl diesel, runs great but light smoke & hard to start, glow plug(s)? are not working. Sheet metal good, but needs paint. Tires not new, but plenty of service left.

I've read thru the archives which tell me the 4cyl engine is a Standard & tends to be hard-starting. The concensus also seems to be it is a good overall, low maintenance tractor model.

When I go look at it are their any particular things to look for on this model? I'm pretty up-to-snuff on the later 100-series, but not the TO's.

Just check the normal things as you would on any other tractor or engine. Check how much the engine breathes through the breather pipe down the right side of the engine, if it is heavy then the engine will need pistons and sleeves. The oil pressure at normal working speed should be between 20 and 40 psi when hot. New glow plugs are available, on this tractor if one stops working then they all do, so they need testing. John

Thanks John, I'll check it out. BTW, I know Ferguson made the TE-20 in a diesel(TEF?), but did they make a diesel version of the -30?

No they only made gas versions in Detroit..John
