I have a harry ferguson TO-30 I think, number on the dash is TO-3775. Anyway the PTO shaft broke in half I pulled it out. But i have no idea what to do from here I have never worked on anything like this before. Is there somewhere I can get a diagram to see how this all fits back together? I am lost, can i get a new shaft at any tractor store?

Thanks for all yoru help I am going to buy the manuals, I got all the pieces out just fine it didn"t break inside. The piece on the bell housing did break as well, its threaded on each end what is that part called? Thier is and antique tractor graveyard near me I am heading out too sat morning to try and get all the parts needed. I will be doing the upgrade to the shaft as well, I will be using this tractor to mow my pastures all summer I want it to be strong. The previous owner broke the shaft it looks to me like he was trying to mow without the deck being level because you can"t level one side right now.

Parts are available. If the whole of the shaft came out of the tractor it won't be a problem, but if it is broken at the front end then there will still be a part left inside the Tractor and to get this out you will need to split the tractor in two. PTO shafts break when they are treated roughly and whatever it is driving comes under load or jambs, the operator will then very often rev the engine and let the clutch in rather rapidly to clear the blockage, but something has to give, if not the load on the machine it is the PTO shaft. If you need assistance in splitting the tractor and what to do with the shaft, email me and I will send it with some pictures..John

why would you have to split it to get that front piece out? Doesn't this use the same setup as a ford 9n/2n with the pto shaft thru the pump... if so.. shouldn't ahve to split it to get a piece of the pto shaft out.

The shaft through the Pump is splined and it normally twists at the back of the Pump, so while the back part will come out from the back (like he told us)the front part is still stuck in the Pump and the Tractor PTO gearbox on the back of the Transmission. Very often this splined shaft is twisted on the splines through the Pump and so it won't move easily. To get the front part out it is necessary to split the Tractor and cut the shaft so it will drop out with the Pump though the hole in the bottom. If the shaft is still in the PTO gearbox and not broken forward of the Pump, you can't get at the shaft to cut it and the Pump won't drop out either until you split the Tractor, the Pump needs to come out anyway to clean it up after all that metal swilling around when you cut the shaft and the old one being broken.....John

Common problem.. we ford N owners don't like the downtime of splitting the tractor.. we simply go in thru the access hole and cut the shaft in front of the pump ( and aft if it ain't broke, but is twisted ), drop the pump, and then drive the slug out of the pump, grab the font piece still in the tractor.. then wash the sump out and R&R or clean the pump.. whatever is needed.

If you look in a Ferguson you will see that there is no room to cut the shaft in front of the Pump as it is straight into the PTO Gearbox and the box is right up to the Pump. You could cut it at the back though.

Might be able to cut it from the top.. should be 100% exact same pump as a ford 9n / 2n

The Pump is the same but it is right up against the PTO gearbox so there is no room to cut it there.

Barely that but you can't really get to it to do the deed. It is much easier to split it.

It's an easy job to replace it. As stated above you have the option of the out dated original diameter end or updating to the larger more universal size commonly found on most PTO implements.
There is however a 3rd option. There is a sleave available to slide over the original Fergy sized PTO shaft to increase its diameter. It's fine for light implement work and may be an option if you want to keep your machine very original with a new PTO shaft. BUT it is only for light work.
I have had all three options over the years and nothing beats the complete PTO upgrade. I sheared my original when I put the sleave on it to run a grass slasher.

If your pto shaft broke in half, were you able to get the whole shaft out? If you were that"s great. If you didn"t, you will have to.

I would drain the transmission oil and flush the sumps out per the method that Jeff(OH) suggests in the archives. Make sure there are no pieces to foul up the unfiltered hydraulic system and the gearing. As phil(va) says the shafts can be obtained easily and his suggestion about the 1-3/8" shaft is a good suggestion.

For about $20 you can also get a Ferguson Shop Manual for your tractor. It has a lot of good systems descritions and info that"s useful to newbies. I"d strongly recommend you get one as well as a Part Manual and an Operatior"s Manual.
Welcome to the world of antique tractors!
