Lift quit working

I recently dug out my Fathers old TE20 Ferguson and restored it. When i got the thing running the lift was working fine, but was low in fluid. I was told it carried hyd/trans fluid. So i added hyd/trans fluid and it still worked fine but leaked profusely for a while. The next time I went to plow the lift woudnt work at all, no jerking no nothing. I learned this tractor should have GL1 90w gaer oil so I drained the system and refilled with 90w and still no response with the lift. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

If it doesn't attempt to lift then it will be one of two things, the Control Valve has become detached from the control fork or the Control Valve has stuck, most likely it is the last one. just gently try to move the Control Fork (the fork hangs down from the top and goes into the oil) back-wards and forwards (Use a long screwdriver or something similar) and you should free it, do this with the lever at the top. If it still doesn't work feel down to the bottom of the fork and see if the cross-bar is located between the two legs of the Control fork, if it isn't you will need to spread open the fork legs and refit the cross-bar. If you still have problems, email me and tell me what you have done and I will send you the info you need to correct it...John

Is the pto/pump drive selector in the connected mode? It"s the lever on the left side of the hydraulic compartment and the pto/pump lever must be in the correct position to allow the pump/pto to turn.
If it"s connected, then I suspect that you either have a stuck control valve or the control fork came off the control valve. You may havea stuck open relief valve or a severly leaking lift cylinder also or there may be a leak in the supply pipe to the lift cover. Take the right hand access cover off(The one with the dip stick in it.). Start the engine and make sure that the pump/pto is connected.UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES STICK YOUR HAND(S) INTO THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING! Move the lift handle to the full up position and observe the control fork movemement. The bottom of the control fork above the oil level should move forward smoothly. Next look up toward the lift cylinder and see if there is any leakage. Any more than a few drops is a leak. Note what you see. Look around the base of the pump for high turbulence and you may here some noise.If you see this turbulence and hear athe noise than you relief valve is open. It either has a weak spring or a piece of trash stuck and holding it open. Using a mirror and a flash light, look into the upper right hand corner of the compartment for a big leak from the supply to near the top.

Now shut the engine off. Reach into the oil and feel the control fork. It should be attached to a "T" shaped device that moves the control valve. If it"s not attached, that"s your problem. Gently spread the forks and try to get them back on to the "T". You may want to drain some fluid to do this easier. If the control fork is attched to the "T", the valve may not be moving. Try to move it manually. If you can"t move it manually you"ll have to remove it.

If you saw turbulence and hear some noise than remove the relief valve. It looks kinda" like a spark plug. See if it"s got some trash holding it open.
If the supply tube gasket or oring is leaking you"ll have to remove the lift cover to get access to the gasket or o-ring.

Since you just monkeyed around with the fluid I suspect you might have a sludged up system and some of that got into the control valve or relief valve and cause the problem. A regular poster in theis Forum, Jeff(OH), has written up a cleaning proceedure for the trans/hydraulic system and it"s in the archives. You might want to look it up and consider doing this. I know you have fresh fluid in there but you can strain it through some cheese cloth and the decant the resulting fluid after you let the dirt settle out and the rest of it maybe reusable.
