I have a 1958 TO35 that has had a small oil leak for some time. After using it the other day I noticed a solid stream of oil running out of the seep hole just behind the clutch access cover plate. It continued to run until no oil showed on the dip stick. How big of a problem do I have?

From how you describe it the leak is coming from the engine as there are two holes underneath and you say it is leaking behind the Clutch, if it is the engine seal it will be black oil like the engine if it was hydraulic oil it would be cleaner. The engine would have to come out and take off the flywheel and then you can see properly what is happening. If you need information on how to split the tractor, email me and I will send it.....John

I have had that transmission seal replace in my TO-35 and it did not help the leak much.

I understand the pto shaft turns inside another shaft of sum such and this system just wears out. The transmission housing gets worn and the only way to fix it is build up the housing then turn it back down. I have had some mechanics tell me to get rid of the TO as it will get to the point this is the only way to fix the leak and it will cost more than the tractor is worth.

They put new seals in mine, I just never fill it over half way on transmission dip stick. Also have added to transmission 1 qt of Lucas oil stablizer, it has sealers and it has helped.

I just keep a 2 1/2 gal container of M1103, 90 weight mineral oil in barn where tractor is parked. Check level from time to time and add as necessary. Oil cost about $40 per container, but that is my only option to keep the old tractor operational and it run like a top.

I have just learned to deal with it.

Isa the oil engine oil or transhydraulic oil? I one case it can be the rear main seal and in the other it can be the transmission seal.
The best thing for you to do is spend the $20 for a Ferguson Shop Manual and split the tractor after reading the appropriate section in it.

Chris it will be hard to tell how big a problem you have. If you got it shut down before any damage occured you may be lucky. My guess would be the rear oil seal on the engine finally got bad enough it couldn't hold any oil back. If the engine is making any funny or I should say unusual noises you may have a total rebuild ahead of you. That is just my guess I would wait to hear what others have to say. Best of luck to you. Richard

Does anyone have pictures or diagrams of a TO35 split in half so I can get an idea of what I'm in for?
