I am starting to rebuild a TO30 that has excessive crank end play.
I will most likely have the crank turned.
I am am TO35 fella, so I have many extra sets of main bearing in all sizes.
I think I read that setting the end play on a Z129 is kind of a pain. AND that some people are using main bearings for the Z134 block because they have the double flanged main bearings which control end play.
Is this information correct? Can I use Z134 bearings on a z129 block and NOT worry about shims and such? Thanks,Mark

No matter what thrust bearings you use in the Z-129 engine you still have to set the endplay with shims to .003" - .007" I had my crank welded and reground to standard size and used the flanged thrust bearing three years ago and have had no problems.

I found this in the archives from Kenny S.

I went ahead and had my mechanic use the z134 bearings. with everything bolted down, the crank turned smooth and everything looks good. so they put the motor back in yesterday and it is running great. Going forward we know the bearings work in the z129 (hopefully for a long time) time will tell.

If you try the Z134 bearings in the Z129 please post what you think of this scheme.

I believe that the Z129 uses thrust washers with shims. Though I haven"t done the procedure, it looks pretty simple. What"s supposed to be so difficult?

I actually don't know about the difficulty level, I just know that I do not have a repair manual for a TO30 and hate to buy one. I'm sure I will because I seem to be pretty wierd about doing things right. I was just thinking about saving a penny or two. Maybe I can create a post and someone could copy me the couple pages in the shop manual which cover this.
Thanks, Mark
