Um... is a sticking clutch also likely to slip?

I've only had one oil soaked clutch slip on me and it was along the highway in Arizona pulled over in the sand. Even two friends pushing didn't help. But, putting it in low gear and floorboarding it in two gears and letting it smoke did. Drove it on to Rhode Island with no further problems. Sometimes you just gotta show it who's boss. I had already had a rear seal installed, I remember the mechanic telling me that the seal cost him fifty cents and he had to charge me twenty dollars to install it. 1950 Ford in 1960....$199.00 + $20.50. You'd spend that much from California to Rhode Island today if someone gave you a free ride. ohfred

It can be the Clutch Driven plate stuck to the flywheel, this is usually caused by oil on the plate which means the Rear Main oil seal on the engine crankshaft is leaking and needs changing OR the Clutch drive plate is sticking on the splines on the drive shaft into the transmission and it won't be able to slide easily. Either way the engine will need to come out to rectify the problems. Make sure that the free play in the clutch pedal is correct, there should be a gap of 3/8" under the footrest when the pedal is pressed just enough to take up the free play. If you need the information to do this work, just email me and I will send it out to you.If you write please explain again what your problem is so I don't have to search for it.TY..John fergusontractors@tiscali.co.uk

Yes, a sticking clutch can be a big problem. One day it may stick and not disengage at all and you will have to split the tractor and replace it. You may have gotten moisture in there and it is rusted somewhat and sticks. A temporary fix is to block the pedal down at night. This is what many people do when they store their tractors over the winter, etc., to keep it from sticking the following spring. You can put a plow on the tractor and when it sticks, drop the plow into the ground in high gear and this often unsticks it quicker than just driving around.
