The serial number to the old girl is 128373, is the one on the motor and the number on the plate of the block supposed to match? Got to tinker with it today, new plugs and wires, I was able to swap some lift parts. It runs a little better but still sputters under a load, I'm thinking its the carbuerator, which i have the kit for, the ol man thinks its in the ignition, and says it sounds like the timing is advanced a little. I'm not saying he's wrong because he's pretty good with those old engines so when we get around to that kit we'll find out

Elvin that is a 1954 TO 30 if you haven't figured that out already. According to Jims graph if you take the engine serial number and subtract 240000 that should be very close to the tractor serial number. As Jim says with in 500 plus or minus. This shows his idea is correct as Eng. SN 368828 minus 240000=128828 and your trac. SN is 128373 a difference of 455. Please pay close attention to what the other posters are telling you and you will have fewer problems trying to repair anything. If when you take the left inspection plate off you find the oil is milky that means water got in and that is not good. If you have to drain the oil to fix your hydraulic problem look through the archives and find JeffinOh where he describes how to drain and really clean the trans. back to the rear end. When done you will know everything is in order and you can be getting it ready for paint. Keep everyone informed of how things are going. More questions just post them here. We know you know how. Good Luck Richard

If the engine is spluttering, change the condenser first as these can play all kinds of tricks and making it splutter is one of them, make sure that you have the correct points gap and that there is no play in the bearings in the distributor as this will cause the gap to vary and that is another reason for it spluttering. Check that the battery is wired up POSITIVE to ground (UNLESS YOU HAVE AN ALTERNATOR ON YOUR TRACTOR and that the feed from the ignition switch to the coil is to the correct terminal on the HT coil, it will be marked SW or + B or something like that. The ground lead from the battery can also cause problems like yours, it should run from the Positive terminal on the battery to one of the bolts close to the Starter, use heavy battery cable not the light stuff they use on 12v cars and trucks. If you need the correct info about timing it and the gaps and quantities, just email me and I will send it to you....John

No, they don't match, but add 240,000 to the tractor number (applies only to the TO-30) and you should be in the right ball park... Your engine number should be about 368373 plus or minus 500 or so... Engines were brought to the floor in large quantity lots, then randomly selected for use so they are not exactly in order. Also, keep in mind that your engine number may also be different if it was changed sometime in its life... Jim in OH
