OT- Deep Cycle Batteries revisited.

Okay here's what I've found out in my research over the last couple of days. 90 amp Hr as previously said is the theroetical full charge abount. i.e 90 amps for 1 hour or 1 amp for 90 hours.


For my problem... How many batteries do I need.

4 25watt bulbs = 100 watts

* # of hours used/day (3 hours/day) = 300 watt-hours/day

/ Inverter effency (.9)= 333.33 watt-hours/day

/ Battery voltage(12 volts)= 27.78 amp hours/day

* # of days (2 days) = 55.55 amp hours.
Thus I need 55.55 amp hours of energy.

Now how many batteries are needed....
% max discharge limit (50%) * Battery rating=
50% * 90 amp hours = 45 amp hours per battery.

55.55 amp-hr/45 amp-hr/battery = 1.24 battries

i.e need a bigger battery or cut usage.

If I use 2 -25W bulbs and 1 14W bulb = 64W.
64W* 3 hours / 90% /12V * 2 days = 35.55 amp-hours.

35.55 / 45 = .8 Batteries. ( that will work)

or the 1 battery will only be discharged 35.55/90 = 40%.

Looks good enough. This assumes no charging circuit.

Do they really use less power? For the same amount of light I would guess they use about the same power, minus the losses involved with the DC-AC conversion inherent in the inverter. They would also require more current. Then again, if you don't need any mains devices it would be a cheaper option overall.

Have you considered using the 12 volt bulbs instead of the 120 volt bulbs? I have had several campers in the past that used bulbs identical to the ones in your house in size, shape and screw in mount. They operate on 12 volts and use much less power than household bulbs. I have even seen these for sale in the sporting goods section at wal mart so they are not that expensive. We used to camp all weekend with one 12 volt battery and never ran out of light while using these. If necassary, you could always hook the truck up to the battery and let it idle for a half hour to recharge the battery as well.

if you are looking for 24 V fixtures, try an RV supplier. A friend of mine has a camper and everyting in it is 24 volt.

In college a few years ago i had a class about environmental responsibility or some such. We toured a home just outside of a town, no more than a mile away from a powerline. They chose to not get on the grid, as the power company wanted a ridiculous amount of money to hook them up since they were the first new home in that area.
the house is run off solar power, a bank of large deep cylcles at 24v output and 110v output. and a honda generator "when [they] want to make waffles." everything like computers and tv were on powerstrips to make sure that there was no excessive drain in the off time. they had a regular washer/dryer. basically if you did not ask you might not be able to tell the house was that different. they used a heat pump to help heat/cool...and there were alot more details i do not remember.
on refrigeration: they had a custom built refrigerator that ran on 24v.
this was a house that they lived in 365 days a year and raised children in. all the tv/game boxes, etc. that children have to have now days worked just fine.

if you want to know more about getting off the grid check with your local college's environmental studies program, find some simple living type websites/magazines ... or the name of the professor was ernie deitrich and the school was st johns university www.csbsju.edu. likely you can find his contact info on that web page. he seems to be a frequent goto consult for the local paper on environmental issues.

my thoughts for you:

since it is a simple cabin type setup with long periods of unoccupation, bringing a pair of 12v group 27 or group 31 deep cycles every time would not be that much extra labor. LED lighting technology is amazing today, so you would have plenty of power for those, leaving ample reserve for other uses.

if you decide to go fancy in the future, there are plenty of good ideas out there. BUT you'll still end up bringing your pair of deep cycles just-in-case anyway. the 24v refrigerator i mentioned was said to be built by a company that makes refrigerators for semi trucks, so there may be a readily available model more suitable for you.

more ideas for you to ponder, hope they help.

I did look at LED's. Like you point out the power drain in next to nothing. What got me was at the two or three sites I looked at last week. All the light output ratings were pretty pethitic. To get anywhere neer a 60 watt incandecent were talking $60+ for one bulb.

LED's look great of spot lighting but for general illumination I think the technology is still to come.

But, I have considered them in certain smaller areas... bedroom and outhouse. The fixtures I am looking seem very reasonble.

Temperature is a big factor. Have you considered that? Below a certain temperature batteries drain much faster, but I don't know the specifics. Maybe someone else will have some info on that.

That is in the information I have. However, I am not that concerned about battery temps. When I take it/them out they will be at room temp from my house.

The internal temp. of the battery will not cool off singificantly before the cabin can be heated (about 30 min). So even in winter, I do not think temp will be a big concern.
