MF-35 stuck in first gear

The gearshift on my 1958 MF35 seems to have parted ways from the rest of the transmission. It no longer seems connected at all. I was in first, but when I went to shift to reverse, the lever was loose. I have read about the stuck in reverse problem (though this machine has never done it).

What are the likely causes (and hopefully solutions) for this problem? I did not see anything quite like this in the archives.

I tried looking into the oil fill hole, but I can not see the tops of the forks.

Remove the oil filler plug and with a long thin screw driver or prybar, push on the selector furthest away from the filler hole, it will be forward of the other one, just move it back into line with the one nearest to you and it will be ok. Obviously some wear on the gearshift and possibly selector, so go easy when changing gear. If the clutch is dragging, that won't help, adjust the clutch pedal to 3/8" free play and slow the right engine down when changing gear and that should improve it, if it still drags it will require more drastic action to the clutch, don't leave it too long though or you will cause unnecessary damage to the transmission with it grinding the gears....John

Looking in the fill hole showed the left side of the shift lever sheared off from the ball down. The visible part of the lever has parted ways with the part in the transmission. It appears to have been cracked for a long time, as only a small area of the crack looks fresh. The force I was applying was not very large.

Is it possible to extract the remains of the shift lever without opening up the whole transmission? Perhaps by pulling the shift lever cup?

You will need to remove the top of the transmission to replace the lever as each lever sits in a cup and is secured from below with a "C" washer. Do make sure that you lift the top cover straight up so that you don't disturb the selector springs, if you drag it sideways off the transmission you will possibly pull the springs with it. The levers are available from Sparex if you need them, part numbers are:- S41551 or MF 180440M2 (High & Low) and S41563 or MF 891405M1 (Main Lever.) The gasket under the Transmission cover is S41532 or MF 180511M92 make sure that the oil is the correct grade SAE40 or 15W/40 Multi-grade....John

I was able to extract the remains of the shift lever through the cup. There was not much left of the spring and no sign of the clip that is supposed to hold it up. I removed the remains of the spring. It appears that it has been some time since it was functioning as a spring.

Given the hardness of the steel, I am guessing it might be hard to repair the lever. Thoughts?

You are correct about the hardness of the steel, I think that I would look around for a used one or buy a new one. They are the same as a TO35 and there are quite a few that have been parted out so you do stand a good chance of getting a used one and all the other bits and pieces to go with it. There should be a clip and the spring under the cup, part numbers are:- 180583M1 Seat (clip) and 180582M1 Spring, an MF dealer may still have these..John

Well Wayne it happens all the time, you can hear it for yourself with a lot of tractors and operators, they are not "sympathetic" to the machinery at all; and then they wonder why it goes wrong, but of course it isn't abuse it is faulty manufacture or some such....John

Eric, the other guys have some good suggestions. But if none of that works, go to the MF forum (just above this one) and look for Big Dean and ask him your question. If you search in the archives on that forum you can find a link for his website. He will have some answers for you on this question and he knows the MF tractors and the differences between them and the TO tractors, etc.

I think your transmission is similar to the earlier TO20/30 transmission?

If it is - why not undo the two nuts, remove the gear lever, carefully re-alighn the selectors (see photo) and re-install the gear lever?

If anything else is wrong it should be apparent whilst the gear lever is out. (There is a roll pin through the gear lever which may have come out or rusted through?)

If the MF35 transmission and gear lever is different to the TO20/30/TE20, disregard all I've said! :?

Eric, I found a lot of info in the archives. It says you can fix it with a screwdriver. also says do not lift up on lever when shifting. Where I found info was under Research and Info "Search this Site" type in "MF 35 gear shift" then search area scroll down to Massey Ferguson forum. If you go and read it would save me from a lot of 1 finger typing. LOL Good luck Richard
