just wondered if anybody has used full synthetic engine oil or a synthetic blend? would there be any advantage to using these types for the hydraulics?

You don"t say where you are in the world but if you are in a cold climate you will definitely benefit from using a Multi-grade oil instead of the originally specified oil which was a straight grade oil and gets thick when cold. The Multi-grade oil spec. does vary depending on how cold your area gets but Castrol recommend 15W/30 oil instead of the straight oil, this does work very well as we know from the comments we get from the people who now use it...John

Welcome fellow TE-20 owner.

As Jerry point's out the manual calls for 90 wt GL1 gear oil for the transmission/ Hydraulic system. If you have water in your oil then following the cleaning procedure will work well for you.

The oil is easil aquired from NAPA it is part number 65-205 for the 5 gallon bucket and 65-201 for the 1 gallon jug. But do call ahead and ask them if they have it.

Here in Cincinnati, I call and they get it in from the Indianapolis wearhouse within a day or two.

As draining out the trans/hydo. oil is a job you do not want to do more than you have to. Make a list of all the little jobs that need to be done while the oil is out...

PTO seals, trumpet axel seals, lift repairs, lift linkage atach point repairs... etc. Plan ahead and you'll thank yourself.

Also take note of the slow filling recomendation. This thick oil does take a little time to flow and level out to get an acurate reading at the dip stick.

Jeff

The spec calls for a 90W (80W for winter) GL1 type oil. this oil can be found at NAPA but sometimes needs to be ordered. Someone might be able to give you the NAPA part number or you can search the archives for it. In England, they recommend 15W30 motor oil and a regular contributor to this forum (gshadel)is sucessfully using 20W50 motor oil in his TO-20. Whatever you use, you need ~6 gallons and you should consider cleaning and flushing the sumps before you add fresh oil. Again, and archive search for a post by Jeff(OH) discribing the proceedure he uses would be valuable reaqding for you.
