I have not had this Tractor long, it ran fine when I bought it. It has a sever miss that is off and on, seems to be on now! At first I thought it was in the Carbuerator, but now I am thinking it is in the firing, you can actually watch the miss with wire connected to a sparkplug wire. It is terrible especially under a load. Since it was on and off I thought it may be a coil which I have replaced. Can anyone help?

Jim, you're mean to ask such tough questions!
When you say you can watch the miss by connecting a wire to a plug wire, do you mean that you observe the spark jumping from the jumper wire to ground? If that is the case, and you see that no spark jumps sometimes, then it seems the problem is definitely ignition-related. 1) I have had bad plugs right out of the box; your new coil might be defective. 2) You can see if the distributor shaft is bent by checking the point gap as it opens for each cylinder. 4) A busted spring on an advance weight(under the point-mounting "floor") could cause erratic timing, even at an idle. 5) Uniform discoloration on all 4 towers in the distributor cap would indicate equal sparking; if one or two still look nice and shiny, they aren't getting the juice for some reason. Do you think the rotor contacts all 4 towers uniformly?
Don't forget to let us know what finally works for you, and good luck! Tex

Yes, I pull a plug wire and connect a short piece of baling wire to the plug wire and watch the fire and I can see it skip or quit firing occasionaly. I have just rebuilt the carb and hope maybe that will fix the problem. I went back to the Carb because I could not find anything at all wrong with the firing! But I did not check the advance weight springs below the point floor but I will. I knew someone would come up with an idea that I had not thought of, THANKS TEX. I do not think the new Coil is bad because it runs exactly the same with the new Coil as it did with the old Coil. And yes I think the Rotor contacts each tower uniformly. Can't wait to find the problem!!!

Jim, this is a tough one!
1) Check fuel flow by removing carb drain plug and catch the flow in a glass jar; will the carb pass a pint or so in a minute? Reach across hood and shut off tank petcock to stop flow. Are there flakes in the output -- probably rust, not gold!
2) My 1949 TE20 had so much rust in the tank I installed an inline filter(NAPA, $6.50) and that put an end to blowing back through the fuel line to clear it.
3) Lean over to watch the throttle rod from the governor under load: does it hold the throttle butterfly arm steady? Maybe the arm is loose on the butterfly shaft. I imagine the end of the shaft is squared and the arm is swaged onto the squared end. As I recall, the butterfly is attached to the shaft with two screws, so you obviously saw them in place when you had the carb apart.
4) Last guess: blow out the jets by mouth -- real compressed air might cause damage, I've read.
Keep us posted!
The irregular spark makes me wonder, though . . .]
Good luck! Tex

This may sound kind of minor but it caused some headache with my TO-20. You should check to make sure your spark plug wires are not crossed. Make sure they are on the right plug so that the firing order is correct. I had this ploblem with mine and it would miss badly especially when you needed power or if you gave it some throttle. Good Luck

Dan

Thanks Dan, but for some reason this Tractor will/has run great on certain days. This is what is stumping me, it's on and off, hit and miss. It just seems to be in a constant miss at the moment!

It's also possible you have a fuel problem. Try cleaning the fuel system, tank, sediment bowl, carb. bowl; then mix fuel system cleaner into the gas. If this doesn't work you haven't lost anything. Water/sediment has caused many headaches, and it's easy to overlook.

Thanks again Ray, I have had the Carb off and have looked it over all seemed ok. Again this is an odd problem, the Tractor can be setting running fine, then after a few minutes it will start its sputtering until it dies or catches up with itself and starts to run fine again. Or if it is running fine at a standstill the second you put it in gear and take off it begins to pop and sputter.

Sounds like my TO-20. You should make sure the spark plug wires are on the right cylinders. If they are I don't know then. You may have to check to make sure that your valves are adjusted right. My TO-20 would pop and stutter when you gave some throttle or took off.

I'd first replace the plug wires-real wire. You may buy a set here or any MF dealer. The dist. must be clean and dry inside and out, moisture and dirt will multiply failing plug wire miss. The points should be flat, smooth and gapped to 0.022";check the coil too. I once found the wire to the points from the coil had broken insulation and shorted to the dist. body, grounding the whole thing. Thats my thoughts.

Thanks for your input. I am going to change the plug wires but the miss I have is really sever, the miss/cutting out is a lot worse than one of four plug wires being bad, or maybe even two of four bad wires. The wire from coil to dist is new I replaced it with the new coil.

Jim; I have read thru these posts several times. Have cleaned and regapped the plugs or replaced the plugs? And have you done a compression check.
Good luck.
