I was digging through a bunch of old literature that I have picked up a few years ago, and discovered something that I had never seen before, namely the published Power/Torque curves for the TO-30 Z129 engine back in 1951. Of course, this is the original 3.25 bore. I thought a few of you might be interested in this, so I scanned it in, clipped it, and rotated it from the sales brochure... If interested, go ahead and copy the picture now, because I will delete it eventually as it is taking up space at one of my sites... Have Fun.. Jim in OH...

I believe in the low end torque of a TO 20 or 30 , We had a TO-20 and it was hard to stop, meaning lots of low end torque. Once as a kid I put our TO-20 in 4th gear while pulling a 20 foot harrow in the field and it took a while before it slowed down, no other tractor in it's size could not even pull it a foot at that speed. It also pulled grain wagons up and down hills better than much bigger tractors.

Seeing this graph makes me wonder what my fergie will make for power.

Mods so far ported head / manifolds, 3 angle valve job and balanced/ blueprinted.

I was gonna try to bump the compression but I decided not to hot rod it to much and stress the block more then need be. More heat yadda yadda yadda and that I paid $600 for a block already

Good find :)

I saved it in my 53 TO-30's file. My 30 has way more torque than a 75 Ford 1000 diesel, which is rated almost as much hp. I like the torque down low.

Thanks again, Paul

Hi Jerry.. NOte that they call it "Brake Horsepower" which, as you know, would have been the engine power on a "brake" dynamometer, and hard to tell in the 50s, but possibly without accessories like generator, or perhaps even not the water pump.... I have actually taken this curve and curve fit the torque to second order then computed power with the extrapolated Torque and got something like this...

And I agree.. it dies off very quickly and with some improvements in breathing, there is probably much to be gained... also probably points out why they went to bigger valves in the TO-30..

Good assumption on the torque curve since the torque tracks the BMEP and the intake pressure losses are like a delta p/q loss which is ~ M^2 which is ~V^2 and V is ~ N.

Very interesting. I"m surprised they didn"t run it out to 2200 rpm which is supposedly max HP. This must be the HP at the engine shaft/ flywheel because it is in excess of the HP"s specified in the shop manual which I believed are measured at the pto shaft on a belt. looks like the gross shaft power is gonna be around 36 HP @ 2200 rpm.
Opening up the flow area in the intake manifold and porting and polishinng the headwill help this engine some. It would raise the peak torque and might flatten the tail off in the torque curve at high rpm somewhat.
Thanks for providing the info.
