Oil Pressure Continued

Done many more tests today. Before I took off the pan, I removed the 1/8" oil pressure connection on the side of the block. I cranked the starter and after a few seconds I got a large flow of oil; but with the pressure gauge connected, I get essentially nothing. So something is bleeding off the pressure instantly. I took off the oil pump, removed the cover plate and extracted the oil relief valve. Toleraces of the gears of within or better than spec. Everything looked good so put it back together. Then I used air pressure on the oil inlet and and a pressure gauge on the outlet and the pressure relief bleeds at 33 psi on the gauge. So my conclusion is that all is well with the pump and pressure regulator.

I tried to use air up thru the front main oil hole but air comes out everywhere up front of the engine with a large amount of air and residual oil out of the bleed hole in the cam on the side of #1 cylinder. Even though it is AIR that I am using, the leak seems excessive. This then gets me back to the cam shaft retaing plate securing the cam with 2 small bolts in the block. Just what could be wrong with this plate that could cause such a leak?

I also removed and checked the oil filter and there is just the one little metering hole in the pipe tube; so nothing wrong there. The pipe had a few surface pits but the pipe was solid when I pressurized it with air. So oil filter is OK.

As for the probem no oil to the rockershaft, when blowing air down thru the rocker support hole in the head, residual oil comes out the aft main bearing, so nothing wrong there.

So the problem comes down to no pressure building up in the main oil galley. And it seems to be getting worse as I play with it. How long should it take cranking over the engine for pressure to build up in the main galley and pressure gauge. And should it build right up to the relief valve spring pressure? And that should be about 30+ psi for the relief valve that I have. I would expect the pressure to build up in 20 seconds or less and to the full pressure, just cranking with the starter (spark plugs removed).

Just what is it with the cam retaining plate that could cause such a pressure loss? The manual mention a copper clad plate but mine looked to be just plain steel. The governor shaft in the cam felt snug when assembling that part of the engine. But for the leakage from the hole, all the oil would have to come by the short governor shaft inside the cam shaft. So it looks like I am back to removing the cam cover plate on the engine. I just don't know what is left. Crankshaft, mains and rod bearings are all new.

Hal, I sympathise with you and your frustration! This may be totally useless information, or it may be a possibility..... .

I'm not familiar with the Continental engine in the Ferguson tractor, but one of the Cessnas I owned some years ago, intermittently lost oil pressure on a fresh overhauled Continental engine - which led to some interesting white knuckle flying!!! The engineers tried everything to locate the problem, to no avail and eventually the engine was pulled for a bulk strip.

The problem was found to be a small quantity of glass beads in an oil gallery, either left over from the original casting or from bead blasting at overhaul. Occasionally, one would dislodge and catch in the oil pressure relief valve, holding it open. The Continental aircraft engine relief valves are very similar in principal to an automotive engine oil pressure relief valve.

Just a thought - or it may be useless information.

How did you validate that the main and rod bearing clearances were correct? Plastigauge?

Checking the relief valve with air will take a lot more pressure then if oil was used because the oil viscosity is so much greater than air. Recheck the spring and set it stiffer. I"m thinking that where your problem is.
Here"s some other thoughts.
Is the oil filter inplace and filled with oil. It will act as an accumulator until it fills partially up.

How does the face of the gears look relative to the pump housing? Any sign of excessive wear on the end faces?
Did you mic the cam journals and the bores to see what the clearances were before assembly? I can"t see how the cam retaining plate can cause the problem if the cam fore and aft clearnace is correct. All the thrust plate/retainer does is maintain that clearance. Did you check the cam thrust plate for wear and the fore and aft clearance when you assembled it? Did you check the pump inlet tube for leaks?

Found the problem with my oil pressure. Done many tests with the pan off. Pressure fed oil thru the oil pump but had to turnover the engine to get it to go thru. Just had a small trickle stream of oil from the filter. Did many more tests but then went back and redone the test above. Now all of a sudden a big gusher stream of oil from the oil filter opening in the block. I had the oil filter housing off the day before and checked the orifice hole in the pipe and all else. Previously at times I had some oil pressure and other times none. I made a plate and blocked the oil filter and now all is fine with about 22 psi. The gasket looked good and was a new one. Only a narrow strip about 3/8" wide seperate the input and output of the oil filter. So this remains a mystery but have oil to rocker arm, etc., and tractor runs fine now. Pressure could be 5 higher but not worth the trouble to put a washer or two under the spring.

What good is this part-time oil filter with such a little flow? Seems would be better without it and change oil slightly more often.

Since the input oil to the oil filter is metered, ti should have NO effect on the oil pressure as the filter just dumps into the sump - no backpressure. Orifice size controls how much oil is bled from the main galley.

The only suspect that I have left might be the cam journals but ... from the drawings, they are fed from the main bearing and not the galley so would would not be too detrimental to the main galley pressure. The mains would restrict the flow.

A lot of worn-out engine pressure problems are an accumulation of worn tolerances that then add up to a large bleed on the system.

Will know more when I pump pressurized oil thru the system.

Hal, I would NOT expect your oil pressure to build to 30 PSI with just starter cranking speed. Manual says pressure spec is ~15 psi minimum at idle, which is 300 rpm, which is likely faster than your start cranks the engine. Pressure is result of flow, your pump needs to turn pretty fast to provide enough flow to build 30 PSI. For a comparison, on my TO after my rebuild, and pump rebuild, I get maybe 10-15 PSI at cranking speed (6V system) maybe 20-30 PSI at idle depending on temperature, and max-out at ~30+PSI just above idle, around maybe 500 rpms.

Are you sure your oil pressure gauge is giving you a good number?

A good pump will have excess flow and can overcome some excessive leakage. Those gears are darn tough to measure for that tight a clearance both the gear backlash and clearance to the pump housing. For the cost of a pump rebuild kit, and the effort needed to pull the govenor housing and tear into the camshaft again, I'd recommend rebuilding your pump first before doing all that.

There is really nothing in the rebuild kit that would help my pump. Absolutely nothing wrong with the pump. I even checked the spring tension with a scale and it is at least the tension that the spec calls for. Spring is about 2 1/4" long although manual calls out 2 inch. I am retrieving my 2 gallon pressure paint pot and will fill with oil and connect to the pump inlet and then pressurize the pot and check just where the oil is going. Can keep system open that way permiting observation and measurements.

I keep telling folks that I have a NEW crank and NEW bearings so that is not suspect as the bearing fit quite snug. I have no spark plugs in the engine when cranking and using a 12 volt system, so it really spins it fast. At times I have had 10+ pound steady at the pressure gauge and other times get nothing. The least of my concern is a correct reading gauge as anyone doing this sort of thing would know that. So far no one has come up with any logical cause. My oil container was full when I took it off to check it for leaks in excess of the small orifice.

If one reads my whole thread so far, I have provided quite a bit of info on what I have and have done so far. Thanks to all for suggestions.

Hiya Hal! As I am currently redoing a TO-20 I noted a seeming reluctance for the oil pump to prime with white grease. I also suspect I may have a similiar problem with oil pressure. One thing you may have possibly overlooked is the tube that connects the oil pickup to the pump. Inside the end of the tube, on both ends, is a rubber insert (bushing)that takes up the slack between the tube and the nut. It is possible that these bushings are worn and not properly securing the tube in place. Your local Fergy dealer will sell you the bushings for about $9 each if I remember correctly. I found them a bit cheaper at a hydraulic shop.

Thanks for the info. Pickup seems OK as when I removed the oil gauge fitting on the side of the block, I had a full stream or oil - but not much pressure behind it. And I believe that the rotating joint fittings are below the normal oil fill line.

Will pressurize the system with oil from a 2 gallon paint pot tomorrow thru the pickup inlet on the oil pump and see just where the oil goes.

Working on a friends NEW VW engine on his airplane with defective valve seating on a NEW engine. All rusty so no compress. Pulling the heads and lapping the valves. The engine was setting for over 6 months. Rear spark plugs were real rusty. Never seen this happen so quick.

I was going to suggest the pressurize the system with oil but have never done it on Continental. Anyway if you don't find the problem right off, turn the engine crank a bit and try again. What did you do for mains. Z129 or Z134? Would like to know the outcome on the brgs.

I have the flange type front main bearing. These can be used on the TO20's and 30's although some folks have written otherwise in this Forum. My engine has the larger sleeve and pistons so is same as the TO35 or Z134. Teh crank is also the same as the Z134. I have had the engine running for a minute but that is it. No oil was comming up to the rocker arm and showing just 10 psi pressure. This started my investigation.

All is well now. Something wrong with the oil filter housing/mounting. Problem has been intermittent during my presurization checks. Finally, the hole inside the block from the filter started DUMPING oil - BIG stream. Blocked the filter housing and all is well now. About 22 psi running and 18 or so idling.

Hal, if you"re happy with that oil pressure after a new crank and mains, so be it. But your oil pressure should be near constant and independent of rpm and oil temperature. I have 350 hrs or so on a rebuild and my oil pressure is 27 psi, hot or cold oil, idle or max rpm. The spec says you shouldnt go below 15 psi at hot idle (400rpm) and you"ve only got a 3 psi margin after all that work. Your pressure at max rpm should be between 20-30 psi and you"re covered there but with a 2 psi margin. I think the problem is in the relief valve and that"s relatively a simple fix at this point. Your tractor, your call.

Tried to locate a spring for the relief valve but they don't seem to exist without buying the whole kit; which I don't need or want. I thought I had found one for just over $3 but they want $10 to ship it. I am somewhat proud and find that intolerable. They refused to throw it in an envelope and ship via USPS.

Question? How many of what thickness washers is need to raise the oil pressure from 20 up to 25-30 psi. I suppose that one could remove the old spring and measure the tension at 2 points and then calculate the K factor of the spring to get a scientific guestimate. Maybe I could take the tension specs in the manual and calculated what I need. But easier to find out from someone who knows the fractional number of lbs/inch. I plan on pulling the pan when I change the break-in oil shortly and crank up the pressure a notch. It is steady at around 20 idling or max rpm, so appears to be a minor weak relief spring.

Don't be negative. You have misread the post somehow. I would like between 25-30 but have 22 psi now. Could put a couple of washers under the regulator spring but not worth it at this time. At least I have running pressure now and lubrication. Idle was at 18 psi. Nothing is worn in yet either. So in most folk's book, that would be adequate and also in your book if I read all your postings correct.

Any idea what might be wrong with the filter housing? Maybe a crack? I even screwed out the pipe, pressure checked it, inspected the small orifice, etc. And what ever it is, it varies the pressure from about 10 psi down to none during all my testing. And in the later phases of it, I had no pressure. Using the same gasket between my blocking plate and engine block. Plate is in contact with the filter housing. Filter system is worthless anyway. Thanks again for all you inputs.

There is a big difference in getting the basic blood of the engine flowing and that was the problem at hand. That does not mean that I am satisfied and finished. I learned long, long ago, to do things in stages. Now that that this phase has been accomplished, I am ready to refine what I have. I don't like adding washers to expedite a fix. The original spring supposedly was right for the proper pressure, but unable to find one without buying the whole oil pump kit. I find this somewhat common on old stuff. One has to by the whole enchilada to get a small item one wants. Not an economical approach for a retirees budget. So I guess it is the washers now. I have calculated about 3/16" extra tension for a 5 psi increase in pressure. This is based on the spec of 8 pounds pressure for 5/8" spring compression; if one does the math. Surprised there have been no comments on this.
