the muffler on my TO-30 is just about done...is there any disadvantage to installing a vertical system as apposed to the factory horiz. unit? Was concerned about the possibility of a grass fire etc. thanks again,DavePA

Peter, Hey, I can't believe you guys. I have a vertical exhaust on my TEA because it looks cool. Also I can tell how the engine is running at any moment in time. If my face turns black, it's burning oil.
If I get CO poisoning sooner than usual the carb need adjusting. If niether happens it won't start. ;-)

I like the horizontal muffler on my TEA as I don't have exhaust gas blow in my face but I did tear it off once while cutting brush. I haven't heard of these tractors causing grass fires but there is a warning in the operators manual so I guess it's possible. One of my friends had his muffler changed from horizontal to vertical but he cuts brush with it and he lost the muffler a few times.

thanks Peter, I never gave the smoke in the eyes any thought and also the limited overhead clearances when traveling overgrown areas. DavePA

I think I saw an add for straight up mufflers for Fergies and Fords once, but after debating myself on the pros/cons I decided to stay with the original design for the reasons already assigned. The only time I have damaged/destroyed an original muffler assy.(1 in 10yrs) was brushogging some large saplings. Not too bad at $23 apiece.
