I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1955 TO 35. IT IS IN RATHER BAD SHAPE AND I AM A NOVICE AT RESTORING SUCH. ONE OF ITS ISSUES IS THAT THEIR IS NO OIL ON THE TRANSMISSION/GEAR BOX DIPSTICK. THEIR IS EVIDANCE THAT THE SEAL ON THE PTO IS LEAKING. A PREVIOUS OWNER HAD APPARENTLY TRIED TO REMOVE THE OIL SEAL RETAINER WITH A HAMMER AND CHISEL WITH ON SUCCESS. ALL THE BOLTS AROUND THIS SHAFT ARE MISSING SO SOMEONE HAS TRIED TO REMOVE THE OIL SEAL WITH NO LUCK. WHAT DO I NEED TO GET THIS DONE. DOES THE RETAINER SCREW OUT. I NEED ADVISE ON HOW BEST TO DO IT. HEEEELP. MIKE/MS

let me start another discussion. I opperated the Tractor for a short period of time before I drained it and noticed that I had to hold the throttle or it would return to idle. Am I missing a friction plate of some kind?

Right behind the dash panel, you'll see where the throttle linkage comes down. It then runs up to the front of the engine from there. Just behind the dash is a friction plate which has a cork friction disc in between it and the bracket. On the backside of the bracket is a spring which is compressed to add friction. That cork friction disc probably has been polished smooth. I know mine was. Tear the throttle linkage apart enough to get the existing cork out, and make a new cork disc. I used a piece of 1/8" cork from Napa and it works like a charm now.

Or if you don't feel like making one, they're still available. A couple bucks if I remember right.

Hey Mike, when you get that PTO shaft out, check to make sure the needle bearing in the front of the differental case is ok. Mine had disintegrated and was chewing up the PTO shaft. In the picture, all the needles are missing from the bearing race.

Good luck! Dan

TO DANS-NY, PHIL-VA -JEFF-OH AND DON HOOKS AND GOING BACK TO THE ORIGIONAL ARTACLE BY GREENBANK, WITH YOUR ADVISE IT WAS A 'PEACE OF CAKE'.
I USED A PIN IN THE END OF PTO SHAFT, THE LIFT ARM WEDGED AGAINST IT AND A SMALL JACK TO APPLY PRESSURE. THE SHAFT STARTED MOVING IMMEDIATELY. AT ABOUT 3/4 INCH I WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE RETAINER AND SEAL WITH MY FINGERS. I PUSHED THE SHAFT BACK INTO PLACE- DISENGAGED THE PTO SHAFT AND IT TURNS FREELY AND THE BEARING SEEMS TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE. I DID NOT WANT TO RISK REMOVING THE SHAFT AND HAVING TROUBLE RE-INSTALLING IT. DOES ANYBODY DISAGREE WITH THAT? THE SEAL HAD BEEN DAMAGED BY SOMETHING BEING TRAPED BETWEEN IT AND THE PTO SHAFT, WHICH PUNCTURE THE SEAL. NOW, WHEN I DRAINED THE GEAR BOX AND REAR-END I GOT ABOUT 4 GAL. OF WATER AND 1 GAL. OF UGLY OIL LIKE SUBSTANCE. I AM HOPING THAT,WHEN I HAVE THE BEARING SEAL INSTALLED, AND I FILL IT WITH 90 WEIGHT OIL EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE. WHAT DO YOU THINK? WE HAVE A SERIOUS HUMIDITY PROBLEM HERE IN SOUTH MISS. SO I THINK THAT THE WATER ACCUMULATED OVER 50 YEARS OF CONDENSATION. ANY ADVISE? THANKS AGAIN GUYS.

I don't think you could have gotten four gallons of condensation. I think the tractor has sat outside and you have a leak somewhere.

Jeff in OH agrees with you and suggested that I look at the Boots around the Shifters and I agree with the two of you. Both are in vary bad condition. I did not make the connection that they were a direct link to the Gear Box.
He suggested that if I am not able to keep it inside to put a bucket over them while sitting. I am able to keep it inside and will order replacements right away.
My Dad owned a MF 35 which was adout a 1960 model. I gratuiated High School with the dertermination to be anything but a Farmer. This is the first Tractor that I have fooled with sence then, so I am truly a novice and am glad I found this site.

Thanks For all your help

Do not fear removing the PTO shaft. However, with it kept in the tractor it will stay clean.

I don't believe in the condensation theory of oil contamination... personally. I think the water get in there through a poor sealing shifter boot. and possibly through the top link position control spring rod.

Put on a good new shifter boot and then place a 4-5 gal. bucket over the shifter if stored outside.

If you had contaminated oil deffently do my transmission cleaning procedure before refilling to make sure you do not re-contaminate the new oil... ask me how I know.

JEFF, AGAIN YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE MARK. WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRACTOR I NOTICED THAT THE SHIFTER BOOTS WERE IN BAD SHAPE BUT IT NEVER DAWNED ON ME THAT THIS WAS A DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE GEAR BOX. I WILL DEFINATELY DIG DEEPER AND GIVE THE WHOLE REAR-END A THOROUGH CLEANING JUST AS YOU SAID.

THANKS AGAIN MIKE/MS

Note on the TO-35 you have two drain plugs.

As others said you have to remove the whole shaft. If you have trouble removing the shaft, one tip I can give, that I didn't see from others, is to put an implement PTO shaft on the end and then you have lots of leverage to pull with. You can even back it up to a bush hog, hook the hog up to the PTO (but not to the lift arms or top link, and then drive away. It should definitely come out that way.

Mike the thread is a good one and should help you. The whole PTO shaft should come out at once.

Once you do get the shaft out and the seal retainer off, pull the old seal out and put a new seal in. Seating the new seal can be a little delicate. I did mine by using a vice and a stiff board. I slow drove the seal flush. Then I used a 2" PVC pipe coupler to seat the seal. The coupler was the right diameter and stiff enough to transfer the driving load.

I have never pulled a "35" pto but a TO30 that won't pull out easily may be bent and you may have to split the tractor to get it out. I'm sure some very good advice will be posted soon. I shiver when I see the kind of strong-arm stuff you are looking at since there are probably more parts that have been beaten into submission.

You're on the way, Mike!

And before you finish the job, there are 5 possible holes for water to get into the transmission.

You've covered the two boots on the gear shift levers, and somebody else mentioned the rubber boot at the top link connection assembly. That's a bit of a bugger to replace - ask for more tips if yours is cracked.

The other two points for water to get in: the plug that caps the oil filler hole, just to the left of the shift levers. It originally had a gasket, and most get lost. I've used silicone caulking to seal that after filling.

And the last hole - the breather fitting under the seat. It's a brass assembly with a 1/8 pipe thread screwing into the top of the transmission cover. It originally had a loose fitting cap, and that often gets knocked off.

Hello Jack, You guys are good. You are the second Ferguson Master Tech to mention the top link assymbly unit. I have not figured out yet what that is but I am looking. Also you are the first to mention the breather under the seat and the filler cap. You are correct, the Cap gasket is missing and silicone sounds like an inexpensive solution.
I am truly enjoying Tinkering with this thing. It must have sat for quite a long time but the engine sound good and I am hopping that once I replace the PTO seal and get the Rearend clean and filled, that all that will function as well. let me start another discussion. I opperated the Tractor for a short period of time before I drained it and noticed that I had to hold the throttle or it would return to idle. Am I missing a friction plate of some kind?

Thanks Again

Mike/Ms
