I first want to thank for all the help on my last posting. Now I found a new problem. The stud where the coil hooks to the distributor has a plastic piece around it that has broken in two and fallen off. Can I just buy that piece from somewhere or is this going to require me to buy a new distributor? Or can I possibly just use silicone to hold the stud where it belongs?

I also was considering going ahead and converting to electonic ignition, and adding 12v coil because I am converting it to 12 volt charging system (bought 12v kit from here). Any opinions on this good or bad?

You can probably get an insulator at an auto electric shop for your Delco distributor. If you decde to go to an EI sytem, you"ll take that insulator out and pull the wires from the EI unit through the hole that the insulator went into.
I have a Pertronix (~$90-$100 for the EI unit only)on my TO-30 and I get quick starts, smoother idling and no point maintenance. They work with a 12V Negative ground electrical system.

Your $"s, your choice!

Mickf,

I converted to electronic ignition and a 12v alternator right away when I got my TO-30. The ignition change is a slam dunk fix for virtually all the ignition-related problems heard about so often in this forum and the 12v. conversion is the ideal way to eliminate all of the troublesome components and wiring irritations so often griped about here.

The electronic ignition is especially beneficial when keeping the original 6v. starter, as the run-time of the unit is very brief (3-4 seconds on mine every time I start it), and I ALWAYS get that "FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK" to quote our esteemed mentor, Jerry/MT.

The two conversions combined make the best overall update to these fine machines there is, in my opinion.

Cheers,

Bill

That is simply a "feed-though insulator".

If you can't get it from Agco, you can use a fiber washer, a faucet washer, or even a little chunk of Plexiglas cut and drilled to the approximate shape of the old insulator.

Or, patch it with an epoxy liek JB Weld.

If you DO decide to go with EI, the little module will have 2 wires that exit the distributor through the hole where the insulator WAS, and it will no longer be needed.
