TO30 Questions

I am currently restoring a TO30 that was handed down to me by my dad. This is my first restoration and I have a few questions.

First, there is a oil leak around the plate that the shifter comes through, and possibly at the base of the steering column. Is there a additive I can add to stop the leak or should I remove these pieces and use gasket maker?

Second, I bought new radiator hoses and a new thermostat. I could not find any directional indicators on the thermostat. Which way does the thermostat go in the upper hose?

Thanks in advance.

Mick, check the oil level in your tranny using the side dipstick under your right foot, but chances are, what your seeing is leakage from the steering gearbox, not the tranny overflowing or whatever. If you think the gasket on the shifter plate is bad, just unbolt it, pull straight off, make a new gasket form gasket paper. Don't use that silicone stuff it ozzes everywhere & there are 2 driled holes with detent poppers/springs in the front that you don't want to goober-up with silicone. Then just drop the shifter right back on and tighten down. As for super-goop that stops oil leaks... don't know of any that don't do as much harm as good. You can shoot grease into your steering gearbox, or replace the seals in the gearbox... which is a pretty big job.
As for the thermo, check again on the sides for an arrow, I've never seen one with no flow mark whatever. There are a couple different styles of thermos, but, if there is no mark, the end with the little plunger, seal, etc. should face towards the engine. On mine it is the "pointy" end of the thermo. If you get it wrong, you will now in about 10 minutes when your engine overheats.

A new gasket is one of the easier things in life. In fact, when ordering ONE , I get ONE pack of ten. Same for PTO and Hydrualic covers. So I have LOTS of gaskets.

Let me add just a little to what Phil said: The oil around the shifter cover would be the least of your worries if it came from the transmission because that would mean the transmission and differential have about 20 gallons of water in them but I doubt that since the overflow would have been bubbling out the dipstick hole. Do check your shifter to be sure the boot is tight and if not you might want to sample the transmission contents by draining out some of the fluid into a clean bucket. If it is clean (i.e., no water), just put it back in and breathe a sigh of relief. As for the steering box, you might get by with tightening any loose bolts around its bottom but be careful, it is aluminum and will crack. If the leak is from the steering arm seals you might try sucking out the oil left in there and replacing it with thin grease (there are several posts about this in the last few pages here).

The oil under the tranny shifter plate is the same reservoir as for the hydraulics and rear end. The oil should not be high enough to be leaking around the shifter plate. Check the level by looking at the dipstick in the round inspection plate just under the right hand of the driver when in the seat. The level should be near the bottom of the round inspection plate, which as you will see is far below the tranny shifter plate. Look closely and see if you have a crack in your steering box. Those boxes are not available new, and good used ones are precious. Sometimes, if the tractor has sat outside, water gets in them and freezes and they crack. A crack can possibly be repaired, or used ones are available at the boneyards. Removal requires removing the dash and all related equipment, so it is a bit testy, but not so hard as just tedious. The thermostat has one pointed end and that pointed end goes toward the radiator in the upper hose at the end where the hose connects to the block. Usually there is a small arrow, but maybe not in your case. Flush your radiator well while you have things apart. Welcome to the world of Fergies.
