Pushing water

Just installed a 160 degree thermostat on my TO30. After starting up and running about 10 minutes she was pushing water from the overflow tube. My temperature gauge was still sitting on cold. I think I have the thermostat in correctly. The thermostat is in the top hose, spring side toward the water pump. I'm wondering if I may have a two fold problem. (Bad cap, Faulty Gauge.) Anyone else ran into this?

When the TO/TE radiator is filled with cold coolant, it should only be filled to just above the core. The rest of the tank volume is expansion space for the hot coolant. If you filled your coolant to the top of the radiator then what you are seeing is normal. Having no room to expand, the coolant is forced out of the overflow.
Usually the thermostat has a mark on it to say engine or rad and that part must face the designated component. Without seeing your thermostat, I can"t comment any further. however, when the enine isall warmed up, there should be a copious quantity of coolant going into the top of the radiator, indicating that the thermostat is performing as it should.

I drained the radiator enough so the top of the coils were barely showing. Started her up and let her idle for about 5 minutes. I could see the water starting to run back into the radiator. So I assume the thermostat is working correctly. I decided to hook up a set of cultivators and put her to work for about 30 minutes. It was only about 40 degrees here today but after she was pulling it only took 15 or 20 minutes for the gauge to move into the green. But it was still pushing water. I'm going to get a new 7lb cap for her this week. Thanks for your help.

If you are continuing to push water out, when the engine is at operating temperature and running, look for bubbles in the coolant. If you see them that"s cylinder gas and you may have a bad head gasket.

Did you check the thermostat with the hot water ,thermometer trick, you may be needlessly buying another one, did you refill the radiator after ploughing and see how much water was used??
maybe insignificant.Could there be trapped air in system. My fordson does that.
