Piston Markings/Direction

I have the oversize pistons (3 3/8")in my TO30 and I find no markings to indicated which side goes towards the front of the engine. So does it really matter since the piston looks absoulutely symetrical to me? The pistons are stamped on one side of the top with "Std. Size Piston" marking but that is on the engine sides of the piston. The spray hole in the rod is not problem as the piston can be put on either direction so the oil hole can be facing opposite the cam.

My rebuild has turned out to be a complete restoration as everything I took apart had problems so I went to the begining of the assembly line. At least I have started assembly now. Spent lots of time searching for price and shipping charges on parts. That probably saved me 50% of the cost. Even got engine parts out of Peurto Rico.

After thinking about this, the factory installation put the mark/arrow on the piston to make sure that the oil spray hole is pointing to the proper side of the engine should the rods and pistons be removed. Many engines have the spray hole or were later added ss modifications for improved cylinder wall lubriction, so rod orientation is important.

In other respects, my oversize pistons appear symetrical in construction, although I have seen some engines that have offsets in the wristpin or elswere that dictates the direction of the piston.

I am doing the same restoration job as you and finally put the oil pan on her last night. I had a difficult time getting the end play correct on the crankshaft, but I also couldn't find any arrows on my pistons. Since I hadden taken my pistons off the rods, I finally figured out that the oil spray hole goes on the opposite side as the cam. I think it does matter because of the the slots in the pistons. If I hadden enclosed mine, I could help you. Lou

My pistons for the '20 were notched at the front. I suspect if there is no index then it is optional. No?
