cold weather starting on a TO-20

Here in northern Michigan, we get cold weather and lots of snow. I use my TO-20, equipped with chains, to do some of the lighter plow work.

Anyway, I started it the other day when it was 15 degrees. It started very easily and I wondered how cold it would have to get for it not to start.

Who holds the record?

I've started my TO20 at -12 and -15 F two consecutive days during a cold, snowy snap a few years back. 6 Volter also. It was harder to get me started than it was my TO. Some cold start tips that work for me, keep your foot on the clutch so your starter isn't cranking that thick tranny oil. Don't choke until after your hit the starter. 10W40 oil in the crankcase and in the air cleaner. And keep that electrical system clean & shiny.

I thought 15F was pretty good, but -35...Wow.

We never get that cold here, we are near Lake Michigan and rarely go below 0 F.

I think those records are safe!

sits in a lean to and starts in all weather coldest was -35 and it's a 6v

My 1954 TEA 20 has started with no assisstance (other than gas line deicer in the fuel) at =30 F. It sits outside all the time.

All I can offer is my personal experience of being a (6 volt) to-20 owner for 30 years. I have started mine below zero, but the battery MUST be good, and I always spray ether in the air cleaner (just before cranking) when it gets down into the teens or so.

I have had mine for years and I have never had to lug it in, add ether, nor thin out the oil. It starts every time and continues to run. I have started it below 0 many times. I think it's the design of the continental engine as I have a Ford 8N and below 15 it doesn't want to start.
