Lift drops too slow

I have a TO-30 with a problem I've seen skirted around on this board but not addressed directly. My lift raises fine but will not drop. I have a plow, single blade, which rises in a few seconds when the lift handle is raised. However, when I drop the handle, it takes roughly a minute or two for the plow to touch the ground. It doesn't matter if I disengage the PTO, shut off the tractor, nothing. Also, when it is on the ground, it barely has any down force. I can drag it 10 + feet before it bites & digs in.

I have seen suggestions about an acorn nut under the lift handle, but I don't seem to have one. I took the cover off (the one with the dip stick) and drained some of the grease. Couldn't see anything obvious but then again, wasn't sure what I was looking at.

Suggestions?

Did you check the quadrant adjustment as Neal described? If it is way out, this may be the reason for slow bleed off of the hyds.like he said. The procedure is detailed in your manual.

Neal is correct about the procedure to adjust the fingertip control. The 4 bolts are holding the entire quadrant assy. to the transmission housing. The control lever is adjusted properly when the implement just begins to lower 2 1/2 inches from the topmost position. If yours is close leave it alone, if not I will email you the page that details the procedure. I won't post it though, jail doesn't fit me. Before doing any adjusting, look at the quadrant. Is the control lever going to the bottom of the slide, or is an adjustable stop there to prevent it? The adj. stop is so you can lower implements slowly each time, such as brushhogging, and not bang the implement on the ground. The lever will bypass the stop by pressing it sideways and on down.

Thanks for the suggestions and offer. I just received my service manual. I was surprised to find out that any Massey-Ferguson dealer can still get ALL parts for a Fergy. I had to re-build my head & was able to get all the parts locally.

Back to my problem. The problem doesn't seem to be in the control lever adjustment. Changing the position didn't have any effect on the drop rate. I am sure I have a piece of gunk or dirt in the portion of hte system that releases the pressure. The service manual doesn't help me much there. It makes statements like, "remove the do-hicky from the thing-a-ma-jig" without saying what either of those parts are or look like. ARGH!

Any suggestions where I might start looking for my problem?

Your hydraulic system will not provide any down force it wasn't designed that way.
As for the slow drop I would first try adjusting the control.
Put something on the 3pt that weighs around 600 pounds. Raise it up and then slowly move the lever to lower it. The lift should start to lower when you have moved the lever forward about 1 1/2 inches. If it doesn't, loosen the four bolts that hold the control assembly to the top cover just a bit. The holes in the control assembly are slotted so you can slide it front to back. I can't remember which way to slide it to make the 3pt lower sooner so you will have to experiment. If you are going to be working on this tractor I would suggest you buy a shop manual and probably a parts manual. You may find them on e-bay. If not then Jen Sales has them.

I realize that the lift does not provide down force. My problem is that it takes a minute or two to lower when I try to lower an implement.

I am not sure I know what you mean by "loosen the four bolts that hold the control assembly to the top cover just a bit. The holes in the control assembly are slotted so you can slide it front to back. I can't remember which way to slide it to make the 3pt lower sooner so you will have to experiment." I have not seen anything that lilke what you describe as slotted holes. Are they inside teh housing or on the outside?

Thanks for the help! I can use all I can get.

The oil in the tractor when I got it was a yellow creamy mess. I used it for a while 'cause I needed to & things worked fine. The lift started acting up so I changed the oil. I drained it, flushed it with kerosene and refilled it with the recommended 90 wt. oil.

Ken, the four bolts that Neal was referring to are part of the quadrant control (read in the center of the lever that you raise and lower it with). They bolt that whole assembly on to the tractor. L8R----Fred OH
