TO-30 Cracked blocks??

Am considering the purchase of a TO-30, 35, or an 8N. Will mostly be a toy for parades and such, but do intend to do some light garden plowing/tiller and some scraping. While I have located a "52 TO-30, I"m told that some welding was done to fix block cracks ( 5 years ago, but less than 10 hours running time since )between the cylinders. Have been told by several people that this is a problem on the TO-30, but not so much on the TO-35. I would prefer to go w/ a Ferguson, but I don"t want to be mired in block problems. Can someone shed some light on the issue?

How much does it cost to repair a cracked block?

Bruce
I have a 9,2 and 8n, a TO35 dlx and at one time had a TO20. Hands down choice out of this group is the TO35dlx. More power, live hydraulics, same handy size, easy decision .

If you can find one, go with the TO35 if you are only going to have one tractor. The High/Low range gearbox would be worth it. Also look for one with a two stage clutch. That said I get lots of things done with my TO20 and I am currently putting a TO30 back together (with a welded block) and enjoy them both. My MF50 (which has the same gearbox as a TO35) is the one I use to pull something heavy though. You just cant beat Low first.

Good luck in your search

Dan

It"s "common" to the Z120 and the Z129 engines but not all are bad. I don"t know about the Z134 used in the TO-35. The OEM engine in my TO-30 had tension rods installed between the cylinders to pull the cracks closed and I never had a problem with leakage or sealing with it. It was just plum wore out and I replaced it with a remanufactured short block that had a furnace braze repair for it"s cracks. It runs like a top and has about 300-400 hours on it. The cracking problem is caused by overheating so while not every block has a crack they sre still a few out there.

They are repairable with tension rods as long as th crack has not propagated down through the bearing supports. After that, it needs to be furnace brazed to repair it. After furnace brazing, the block which has been stress relieved by the process, is allign bored and ready to go back in service. I saw a Case backhoe block that was damaged worse than I have ever seen a Z series Continental, be repaired by furnace brazing and go back into service.

Check for coolant in the oil when you look at any tractor. It could be a bad head gasket or a cracked head/block. I think head gasket problems are more common but that"s just my opinion.

Bruce I spoke to a fella yesterday that has 2 to 30's with cracked blocks between the cylinders. It sounds like this is more common that not, but I do not know what it is related to.

Yeah, Craig, it was me you talked too, and I still have both blocks. I would sell them to anyone for $100.00 each if they wanted to get one fixed. I no longer have a complete Ferguson to go together, so it all goes!! I will plan on dropping off the hood and grill and doglegs on Tuesday morning!
