Have what I think is a '53 (Ser # TO 103080, Eng # Z129-344432). Run it sveral times/year, but sat for last 3 months. With fully charged battery (6V system), turns over, but will not fire. Pulled rotor cap and see no spark at points when turning over. Would this be a bad coil problem? If so, can I get a replacement thru TSC (Tractor Supply Company chain here in TX)? Thanks for any help/suggestions!

Check to make sure you have clean shiny connections at the battery, ground lug on the tractor frame and the wiring to the ignition switch, coil, & distributor. 6V systems are very suseptible to corrosion problems. Like Don says, check spark at the plug, not the points. You want to see a blue-white fat spark at the plug, not a weak orange/yellow spark. If your suspect about the points/condenser, I'd replace those before thinking the coil is bad. Like Don says, coils usually don't go bad from sitting. But, if your coil is bad, yes, TSC and Napa both sell 6V replacement coils for ~$15 or so.

First, thanks for the helpful hints back in Dec. Just got around to checking everything out. Cleaned all electrical connections (battery, coil, plugs, ignition switch, ammeter, generator, and starter). Regapped points and plugs, which are only a year old with less than 5 hours on them. Checked for spark with a spare plug held to block - no fire. Not sure what to try next, tho still suspect coil. Any other suggestions?

After sitting up for a while the points may have become corroded just enough to shut you down. As a rule, the points don't generate much of a spark - the condenser is supposed to prevent that. Did you check for spark at the spark plug? I keep an old (good) plug and, when in doubt, pull one of the plug wires and see if I get any spark then work backward if I don't. I've found the fuel system to be the problem more often than the ignition. The last time I had the same problem I burnished the points with some heavy paper (old grocery sack) and checked the gap and solved the problem. Coils usually fail in use and I would check everything else before changing it out. Other potential issues almost all have to do with corrosion so check the low voltage wire from the distributor to the coil and the coil to the switch and don't forget the high voltage coil wire at both ends. Original plug and coil wires were copper but some replacements are carbon thread and moisture can seep into those if the insulation is faulty. As for TSC, they have some tune-up parts but I don't know about coils.
