Seems like good and bad advice here on this subject. Some folks say you CAN'T use a flange bearing on the TO30 and others say you CAN as the flange has the same thickness as the thrust washer. When I took my Z129 apart, it had a flanged bearing. I have purchased the flanged type. So lets hear all that good advice now.

Not sure what the point is. While it would be nice of folks who don't know what they're talking about would at least say "this is just a guess" you're not talking to, nor paying for, professional advice here.

I met an elderly intelligent black man years ago who had a problem with his car. After numerous part changes based on folks advice that did not fix the problem until finally the problem was found; he said this. "Why do they say they KNOW when they don't know"? A very good question. He lived in a small shack like a share cropper in South Carolina but was rich in mind. So what he says applies here and at my elderly age I find it all to common for folks to pretend they know when they don't. It is an ego problem trying to impress others. Little do they realize the problems they can cause.

With reference to the problem with the flanged bearing it is indeed true where this sort of ill advice has caused folks to purchase the other type. All you have to do is research this site.

I have always been under the impression the bearing shells were interchangable also, as long as the bearing shells are drilled to account for the differences between the TO20 & 30 oil ports in the bearings. You can't just slap TO20 bearing shells in a TO30 because of that. Most places seem to stock TO30 shells & sell them for both TO20's & 30's. The extra oil ports in the shells don't hurt the TO20. I have consistently seen posts that quoted the service manual on the differences between the TO20 & 30 bearing shells. I've seen posts that offer opinions on WHY one style is better than the other. I don't recall any posts that explicitly say ONLY the non-flanged style will work in a TO-30. You may have interpretted some of the above discussions that way though. I'm with you Hal, if you have flanged shells already, why change them to non-flanged shells?

George

I think that my dad said that you could use the bearings for a Z134 in the Z129 and not have to use the shims ????? ?

My understanding is that if you use the thrust washer system, you use an unflanged #1 bearing. If you use the flanged #1 bearing, you don"t use the thrust washer. If I"m wrong, I"m sure someone will correct me.

Your answer sounds correct. It all goes to show that one needs to scrutinize all advice to some degree before proceeding. Folks have re-ordered bearings because of bad advice.

Thanks
