I have a TEA-20 6V, Oct. 1947 running with negative ground and would like to change this as a first measure: The engine starts (and runs) well, despite the fact that the starter most of the time(!) turns verrrry slowly. Sometimes the starter even doesn't turn for about a second. The battery is a new one, fully charged. The ground at it's dashboard connection gets hot while starting. Nevertheless, making a direct connection from the battery ground to the attachment of the starter with a starter cable doesn't help much.

Having read all the previous postings about the polarise issue, I still have questions.

Is this correct:

1. I have to remove the actual negative ground on the battery

2. The actual (wrong) positive connection to the battery should not be removed

3. The actual connections to the generator do all remain in place

4. I have to make an additional connection to the connector on the LUCAS generator which emerges from the surface (the other one is located within the generator). There is no 'G' or 'F' visible on my generator!

5. I have to wipe this additional connection on the positive pole (future earth) of the battery until I'm seeing some sparks

6. I have to exchange the two connections to the coil

7. Without additional measures, this can do no harm to any electric parts
Thanks

Hello,,,,, ,,Would it be possible for a generator to lose it,s polarity by sitting idle for a long period of time? Thanks Ian

Make sur ethat when you change the polarity of the electrical system, you also change the polarity of the coil. The primary circuit wire that goes from the coil to the distributor should have the same sign as the system ground, i.e. if the ground is positive, the wire to the distributor must be on the (+) terminal of the coil. This maximizes the spark energy.

Swap the battery and coil connections, then polarize the generator BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE.

Changing the polarity will have NO EFFECT on your slow cranking/hot connections "issues", though.

You need to clean up the connections and replace battery cables,as needed, with HEAVY replacements.

I can't answer your questions, but do have one comment:

If you're having problems with wires/cables getting hot while cranking, keep in mind that they have to be twice as heavy for 6 volt as they do for 12 volt. So assuming they are not original, they may be too light.
