I recently pruchased a Ferguson TO-30. It has a generator (it has been checked out good) and a Delco Remey #1414 12V voltage regulator (this has been checked out as good also). When I purchsed the tractor, it was running with a 12V battery and negative ground ignation system, all wires connected to the votage regulator were cut off and I have been trying to connect them. So far I have only a dead short some how. The Generator has "A" and "F", regulator has "F", "BAT", "L" and a connector on back. I have connected Gen "F" to VR "F", "BAT" to (+) on battery (-), Gen "A" to VR "L" and rear tab to ground ---- When I connect the ground on the battery I have a dead short ---- suggestions?

I got the problem corrected ---- had it wired wrong ---- Thanks to Bruce (OR)for lead, to FENA for wiring diagram and Yesterday's Tractor for web page ---- I'm going to ride around now John H.

The typical wiring scheme is as follows;
Generator "F" to regulator "F"
Generator "A" to regulator "G, or GEN" . G stands for generator, not ground.
Regulator "L" to your key switch & ignition. Regulator "B" to battery, negative terminal if using positive ground. Reverse if using neg. ground. If you have an AMP gauge, run the wiring thru the AMP gauge in route to the battery. The actual ground for the regulator is via the mounting bolts on the regulator.
The stock generator on your TO-30 was a 6V generator positive ground. I assume your generator has been replaced or upgraded to 12V at some point. Once you get your wiring up to speed, you should polarize your generator before firing-up your tractor. Your generator will run positive, or negative ground, as long as it is polarized first.

I did a search on this Ferguson site for wiring diagrams and got 539 hits. You will need to weed out the six volt ones. I'm confused why the wires were cut if both the VR and genny work well?

I don't know the Delco Remy nomenclature but, in my experience, every regulator I've seen with a connector on the back is for a positive ground system. You might want to verify the regulator specs. In any case, you should look under the cover of the regulator to see if anything is smoked.

Fena has wiring diagrams. My TO-20 is getting redone with a 12 V upgrade to the original Gen/Reg to start with. I will probably upgrade it to the Alt set up later on just to avoid overworking the 12 amp generator.
