I"ve been using my tractor for the last two days, fairly hard, considering it sat in my shop while I tore it down for 2 years. I noticed the hydraulic system got weaker and slower while I was bushhogging. It also jerks up and down pretty bad.

I"m thinking one or a combination of two things is going on here:

1- the pump is shot....again

2- there"s mess clogging up the pump"s intake and starving it for oil (hence the jumping)

Changing the fluid in it would help immensly, I"m sure, as it is quite nasty.


Also, my live PTO won"t engage while the tractor is running. I have to start it with it engaged, which I know isn"t good on the starter or anything else for that matter. I"ll just assume that the engagement clutch for the PTO is shot or something like that. Any ideas?

You don't say if your hydraulics drop at all when you turn the engine off, if they do then it will be either a blown "O" ring, wear on the Control Valve, or worn side chambers valves. Check for leaks through the left round inspection port. Never fit new valves in old chambers, they don't last very long. Change the Control Valve as the washers wear between the chambers on the valve. The oil should be changed every 12 months as it goes stale with standing, you should use GL1 90W or you can also use Multi-grade 15W/30 if you are in a cold climate as it will not go as thick as the GL1. The PTO clutch will probably need resetting through the inspection hole in the bottom of the clutch housing. The initial setting was .090" but you will have to reduce that but don't go lower than .065", reduce the clearance in .005" steps until the Clutch clears, don't overdo it. NEVER use hydraulic oil in the Ferguson Tractor Hydraulics....John

Yeah, I definitely remember to use GL-1 and not GL-5. Something about the material some bushing are made of..... it holds about 9 gallons, right?

The TO-35 holds 8 gallons, if you get all the old stuff out, which is not always easy. Best to put in about 7 gallons and let it sit overnight and then check to see if it's full before adding last gallon.

Just make sure that's 90w GL-1, which is about 40 wt., not GL-5 gear oil.

With the hydraulics slowing down when the tractor warms up sounds as if the pump has some wear; which is normal with a tractor of this age. I would first drain out the hydraulic oil & replace it with 90 wt. gear oil. Most tractors of this vintage will perform better with 90 wt. compared to hydraulic oil. As for the PTO, check the free-play of the clutch pedal & adjust it to about 1" of free-play.
