I just got this tractor. not sure if to30 or to35. After running for about an hour it stalls and won't restart for 2-3 hours. Any Ideas? Thanks, Gary

That's kind of long for the ordinary overheating coil or failing condenser.

Another long time constant failure that works like that is a plugged gas tank vent, usually in the cap. That's easy to test. Run it until it stops and then loosen the gas tank cap. If it inhales, and starts in a couple minutes, that's the problem. Modern automotive caps don't vent and will do this to a tractor though usually it takes only a quarter hour or so, but if the tank is nearly empty it will take longest.

One long and one short gear shift levers= TO-35.

One long gear shift lever= TO-30.

Tell me more about your tractor, 6V system, 12 V syste, etc.

Have you checked the spark when it stalls or won"t start? Pull the center wire out of the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and try to start. You should have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. If you don"t there is most likely something wrong with the primary ignition circuit. Points improperly set, burnt or corroded, loose wire, corroded, dirty or loose connections, wrong coil for voltage of the electrical system (i.e.6V coil without current limiting resistor in series with coil on a 12V electrical system), bad key switch, etc. Just taking a WAG, I say your coil might be overheating and shorting out internally especially if you have a 12V system.Feel the coil. Is it really hot whe the engine stops?

If you do have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, then suspect the fuel delivery system. There are filters in the sediment bowl and the fuel inlet elbow of the carb. You may have a restricted float valve in the carb or a dirty carb. The quickest check is to open the tank valve and holding a container under the carb, remove the big plug at the bottom. The fuel should gush out like a cow peein" on a flat rock. It it doesn"t then your fuel sytem is restricted. Check the various screens and filters in the fuel delivery system and recheck the delivery if you clean the filter(s). Make sure the tank vent in the fuel cap is not clogged.

Gary, lots of ideas, we can probably pin down some ideas a little better with more info. Check your serial number over on the left column so you can figure out if you have a TO30 or 35, or what engine you have, it"s either a Z129, or a Z134. Do you have a 6V system, or a 12V system?
A common 1 hr, then stall cause is a poorly installed 12V conversion that causes the coil to overheat. The engine re-starts when the coil cools down. Another possible cause is a gunked-up ignition key that gets hot from shorting out and causes you to lose ignition until it cools down. Next time your TO stalls, pull a spark plug and check spark ASAP. No spark, or a weak yellow spark would verify an ignition problem. You can start backtracking from there.
