I recently replaced the distributor points on my TED 20 however after hooking up the wires nothing happened,i inspected the points which had been badly burnt, the spring strip holding them had heated up and gone black and the spring-iness had disapeared, - this only took a moment to happen.
Does anyone know how this happened?
I have just bought new distributor points and rewired the tractor so i am anxious that it should not happen again. Could I have hooked up the coil the wrong way round? Thanks, Dan

Hey Dan, that's the secret Ferguson cab heater!
Seriously, remember that the electric flow is from the battery through the ignition switch, through the coil, then to the points. When they close, the circuit is completed to ground and the coil charges; when they open the circuit is interrupted and the coil releases its spark. It sounds like battery power was flowing through the points directly to ground, with no interruptions. I like Ray/IN's suggestion as a likely possibility. Also check the point gap to be sure they open properly. Let us know what the answer is, and good luck! Tex

Hi Dan

Looks like the wire to distributor was connected
directly to a wire coming from the battery by mistake and produced a dead short circuit. If connected corectly from the coil if the points are closed should be no damage...if you let power for long period the coil will overheat and you risk damage to points and coil.

You may look proper wiring on another tractor or in service manual.

Hope it helps

Be sure the end of the point spring, or plate does NOT touch the dist. housing after installation. This is a direct ground, and will cause your problem if overlooked. As soon as you turn on the ignition ZAP! I had to gently file off excess material on some cheaper points to get them to clear properly. Remember, the point plate rotates during operation. I hope this helps.

Did the tractor run just before you replaced the points? Or did u do the whole rewire project since it last ran? I don't think hooking the coil backwards will do that. Is your tractor 6 volt? Positive ground? Sure you don't have a short in the distributor? Tell us more.

The tractor did run but needed some work on the engine, so i un hooked the coil and distributor but took note of the wire positions, on reassembly I replaced the points and condensor, Iam resonably sure i hooked everything up correctly.... The wiring loom was partly original and partly patched up and was apparently `customised` but the spark department ran correctly before dissembly. I had it rewired after the overheating incident but am loathed to switch it on until i can be sure it wont happen again.
Thanks Dan
