I have recently aquired a MF35 and need help with the model ?
Its a 4 cylinder diesel with both the exhaust and air filter on the right hand side . the air filter protrudes through the bonnet, the plate with the serial number is missing

You have a MF35. That is the model... Eye opening I know. Now as for the Letter Codes.

1st letter is the chassie type.
S= standard Chassie. U= Uitility axel. R- Row corp twin
T row crom single
C High clearance axel

Second letter is the engine type
there were 2 diesel types,

Third is the Clutch type
F for single stage Clutch
and M for 2 stage clutch... live PTO.

Also, if you cannot find your data plate (left side of dash) then there is a casting code on the transmission housing just below the left steering arm. The numbers read #-letter-#. and represent Day Month year of when the housing was cast.

i.e. 25-G-8 is 25th of July 1958
A = Jan.
B = Feb.
C = Mar. etc.
"I" is not used and is skipped, thus,
J = Sep.
K = Oct
L = Nov.
M = Dec.

This is not a direct dating method, but the castings were usually assembeled into tractors within 2 to 4 months of manufacture.

Thanks for the reply, im still busy removing gunk from the casing, does the following make any sense to you? MHF 182 840 M2 (stamped on the transmisson casing)

Hi Gary,
It will have the 4 cylinder Standard Motor Company 23C engine in it. These engines were fitted between 1957 and 1959 in the MF35, after which the engines were replaced by the 3 cylinder Perkins. Your tractor will be mechanically the same as the Ferguson FE35 Grey Gold with the 23C engine.
Does yours run OK - these engines have a reputation for been bad starters.

Thanks for the reply, as for bad starting....
This tractor stood for almost 2 1/2 years under a roof of sorts. I bled the system and she started with the help of some quick-start. She ran and revved smoothly for ablout 5 minutes and then cut out on an air lock. I have stripped and cleaned all the gunk out of the fuel pump (inlet valve was stuck open)and replaced both fuel filters. I will let you know how she starts later this week.

If the engine is in good condition then personally I prefer the 4 cylinder to the Perkins - they run really sweetly. Interested to know how it starts after you've got all the fuel system fully sorted out.

Steve,
Ive been offered a few 3cylinder 35's in the past and have turned them down and waited for a 4 cylinder to come along. You are right, the 23c motor is better than the perkins in my book.
After the fuel system strip down, she started first time and run smoothly. The next morning was another story.... lots of white smoke and nothing else.. had to re-bleed the system and then she started perfectly (I havent connected the cold start thermostat yet)Next morning same thing.. had to bleed the system again. Im busy replacing ALL the copper washers as will let you know if that solves the problem
