I&t manual states crank engine until #1 piston is coming up on compression stroke, then insert rod into timing hole. My question is how can i tell when the #1 piston is coming up on compression stroke. Head is on engine and valve cover.

Matt. On your injector pump there is a inspection plate that is secured by two bolts {5/16 head}. Remove this. Inside there is a shft that is driven by the camshaft gears. This shaft has some alpha letters on it. The one you are interested is the letter "G". Crank your engine until the scribe line that is associated with the "G" and the scribe line on the ring are matched. When this happens, number one cyl. will be at 19 degrees BTDC and yor 1/4" rod should slip through the hole in the flywheel. Be sure and turn off your fuel supply and put a pan below your injector pump before you do this. Keeps your shop floor clean. Hope this helps.

Matt. I did not have my I&T manual with me last night, but the para # is 138 in my manual. The manual # is MF14, no date, and is on page 46. Interesting, I just took my pump off and will be taking it in for "refurbishing" tomorrow. I could not find any instructions on the tear down or inspection of this pump so I am taking it to a injector pump shop. They sure are expensive. Good luck on your installation. By the way, I would think that you should align the scribe marks on your pump, look to see where the key is on the drivi gear, crank the engine until the corresponding key is in the same Clock position at which time you should be able to manually turn the engine over to fine tune the rod insertion. Let us know how things work out.
