My TED20 has a twin tank setup for starting on petrol then changing over to TVO. If I run it on Leaded petrol I have been told it will loose power and overheat? Is this true or just an old wives tail, to stop people wasting petrol when it was scarce rather than expensive?

Ok thanks for all the advice, the easy way seems to be mix up some TVO repeat the same job where I noticed the overheating and see if there is a change. I will let you know how I get on thanks very much for the assistance.

John.
Can you confirm it is OK to run the Standard engine on unleaded fuel?
I have been using unleaded in my TEA20 (leaded fuel is not available in Australia) but always add the recommended quantity of Lead Replacement Fluid which is recommended for all engines built before 1986 (?) I think it is.

Thanks

Run it on unleaded fuel, it was made to run on that, but what you said about overheating is correct, this is partly due to the compression ratio being much lower on a TED than a TEA. Having said that I know quite a lot that do run them on just petrol only, so take your pick. TVO is available again in the UK or you can mix your own which is quite easy to do, I have a recipe if you want it. The TEA is more powerful than the TED.If you run a TED on all petrol, remove the Manifold cover....John

TVO probably has more BTU per pound/gallon than gasoline, so if you can burn it efficiently it could give more power. But because its low octane the engine has to be made with a low compression ratio that makes for poor efficiency on gasoline. Also the timing has to be retarded so it doesn't knock from the rapid combustion of the low octane fuel.

On gasoline the timing could be advanced (and retarded timing will lead to hot exaust valves and manifold) and the mixture run rich. A rich mixture runs cool but produces a bit more power even with a tiny bit of black smoke. The TVO timing could be hard on exhaust valves burning gasoline and certainly would not be efficient timing burning gasoline. And since the fire burns most of the fuel, inefficient running can mean more heat to the cooling system.

So I'd forget the TVO, tune and time as a pure gasoline engine and I think it won't overheat.

Michael.
From what I have read, it is correct a TED20 should not be run for long periods on normal gasoline. It has to do with the octane rating - TVO has an octane rating of zero (i.e. is more flamable), whilst gasoline has an octane rating of 80 to 100 (i.e. is less flamable). Expect valve and other engine problems if you run a TED20 long term on gasoline.

TVO and octane rating is a very interesting story in itself and worth a read by any TED20 owner. Check the Wikipedia link below and the link to the UK Ferguson site. I think the formula for TVO is available from the UK Ferguson club site.
My interest in fuels and octane ratings was sparked by the effect of incorrect octane rating fuel in aircraft engines and subsequent engine damage. Your day can certainly get exciting when the fan stops in a single engine aircraft - just watch the pilot sweat! :D

According to the link, TVO has an octane rating between 55 and 70 - it"s paraffin that is zero. As for flammability, I"d take petrol over TVO anyday.

Over here in NZ kerosene is acually dearer than petrol! so we all use petrol in TVO tractors. With my farmall H, I just run a bit richer than normal and she is ok. I had a ferguson when I was in England and I did have the head converted to unleaded by the firm that used to do my engine machining for my business, also had this farmall done, I think it was 20 per cylinder (sorry, no Pounds key on an nz computor only $ !!) but that is to only stop valve seat wear, no diff to the running.
