TE20 Starter Removal for Dennis.

Dennis,

here is the picture I took while removing the starter switch. Note the cord tied to the link to keep it from falling into the transmission case, never to be seen again...

I tied a loop in the end of the cord, passed the free end through the loop (like a lariot) then passed the new large loop over the starter. Thus I had the link captured, and it made it easy to pull off as I did not have a knot to untie.

To remove the switch. Carefully pull the cotter pin from the connectin pin. (left side under switch.) then gently remove the connection pin ftom the switch and rocker arm. Be careful not to drop them down into the transmission case.

The switch is now free to remove. Note: I removed the pin at the switch, not the one between the rocker arm and the starter link.

Reverse procedure to re-install.

Jeff, the TE has a different switch that the TO"s. I thought that was the case when I saw your parts break down in one of your previous posts. John(UK) often referred to the possibility of loosing the link in some of his posts but when I replaced my switch, I just unfastened the switch and removed it. The actuating link on the TO switch is captured by a clevis in the switch mounting plate and thus will not fall down. It"s attached to the S-R shift rail by a spring pinned to the shift rail and the link. Makes me wonder why they changed the design between the two tractors. Maybe Lucas used one of their existing switches and that was the only way to make it work.
Anyway, thanks for posting this picture. Iwas thinking that maybe FENA ought to use some of your picture to publish and article about some of the differences between the TE-20 and the TO-20/-30. I"ll contact Paul Nelson ands make that suggestion. You can write the article in your spare time!

When you wondered why anyone would would change a good idea for a poor one, you said the magic word, LUCAS. Ask anyone who has worked on their handiwork in older British motorcycles and cars and immediately they roll their eyes back in resignation and heave a great sigh.;^) No offense to John in UK. Speaking of John in UK, I haven't seen him post for some time. Hope he's doing well. His input is invaluable.

Thanks, Jeff. That"s a good picture that helps me understand how it works.
I"m hoping mine will work ok and I won"t have to pull it out, but if I do, your instruction is most appreciated and I"m sure benefits others, as well.
