Got the battery back in the tractor today, got the fuel bowl to seal after a lot of spilled petrol, have the oil pressure gauge mostly sealing...and the tractor is backfiring but not starting, which is mildly irritating but at least means that there is gas and spark out there. I had the distrubutor out and I expect I didn't get it back exactly correct, though I thought I was pretty darn close.

In any case, I can fiddle with that tomorrow. Only other issue is that the carb is completely rebuilt, and the bloody thing overflowed today...I'm sure the float is fine, so it must be a sticky needle valve.

I have the power screw turned out 1 1/8th of a turn...is there a similar rule of thumb for the other adjustment screw?

Anyway, nice to hear it spin around and see some pressure on the gauge.

Your float may need to adjsut the float setting on the carb if it"s flooding.

Look through the archives about setting the intial timing. I"ve described the proceedure I use numerous times( in fact about 3 times on the front page of this forum the past few days)and it will get you right on the mark regarding initial timing. If you can"t find it or have questions just holler back. I"d redo it now but I off to do somethings and I haven"t got the time right now.

Ahh, the joy of tinkering. You'll get there. Each step is progress.
