Any suggestions for my TO 20 backfiring through carb?
It's a 50 model and has been rebuilt a few years ago but sat up for a few years. When I got it, I replaced points, plugs, condenser, cap, rotor, rebuilt carb etc.
It cranks and idles fine with the exception of a slight cut out. But when you rev the engine,or get it under a load, it really cuts out.
I've been told that a possible valve adustment is needed. What do you think?

David, Jerry hit right on it. Sounds like a likely poor ignition spark problem, i.e. idles okay, but misses under load. Make sure you have the blue spark Jerry mentions. An orange/yellow spark will cause your problem. There are dozens of posts on things to do to fix weak spark. If needed, search the archives, or just scan back a few pages to find all the info.

Timing is easily checked with a standard timing light. Connect the power leads to a 12V battery, and the pick-up clamp to your # 1 plug wire, & aim thru the timing hole near the starter (probably has a plug in the hole that needs popped out). That 7 degrees is at idle, ~400 rpms. Your distributor should shift the timing to 32 degrees at full engine speed.

Check that easy & common stuff first before tearing into your valves.

Just for the heck of it, check your firing order 1-3-4-2, counterclockwise on the distributor. These engines will run, but run rough if the order is wrong.

Since your TO has been sitting a few years, I suppose it is possible you have a sticking valve. If you want, you can add some Marvel Mystery Oil, or similar snake oil, per the instructions on the can, to your crankcase, to help clean-up any died-up deposits. Won't hurt a thing, might help.

Make sure thatyou have a good spark(FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE). make sure that you timing is correct(7oBTDC) and that your centrifugal advance is working correctly. Adjust your carburetor per the method outlined in theshop manual.

With just the information you"ve provided, I think you may a have a problemwith your initial timing being retarded. But so the check outlined above in a systematic fashion, checking after each change to see if the problem is corrected.
