Tried to crank up my ole TO-30 (6-volt system) this afternoon and was chagrined to find my battery was dead.Decided to jump cables off my Toyota corolla and she cranked and fired immediately.Went off and happily bushhogged for 3 hours got back to the barn and decided to shut her off,then crank her up again to see if battery had any charge and all I got from the starter was a whirrring noise. I'm now wondering if jumping from 12 volt to 6 volt may have damaged my starter any ideas?????

I'll step back a little further from these guys. Before changing any thing or getting too concerned. Give the starter a nice tap with a wrench.

It may just be a little binding with the bendix. I too have this issue. She'll crank, but not fire for some reason then I hit the starter button again and Whirrrrlllll. Lean over give it a rap and she'll crank again.

Could simply be a little oil and grease build up etc. If this tap solves it. Ignore the non-problem. If it becomes a nuesence then pull the starter and clean and oil the spindle so the bendix operates smoothly and easily.

I do not see a problem here. And I would not worry too much.

If the rapping does not help then before I'd pull the starter I'd make sure I had a good charged battery and good 0 or 1 guage battery wires. i.e what mark said.

The good news is you get a whirring sound which means the wiring is largely intact just not enough volts to kick the bendix out. The problem of a dead battery is likely the same problem after running three hours: the battery is either not being charged or not capable of holding a charge. The old six volt batteries are bad to consume water if the voltage regulator is not just right so you may simply need to add distilled water and put it on a slow charger overnight and see what happens. On the other hand, unless shorted the voltage regulator seldom goes bad so the likely culprit is the generator brushes. Good luck.

Everything Mark said is true, the larger cables make a big difference, also if you need to buy a new battery, get a 8 volt group 2 battery. It will charge just fine and will also give you a little more power to spin the engine. I have been doing this for 30 years. I have a TO 30 and a TO 20. Remember it is a positive ground system.

A 6 volt starter can take 12 volts---just not for a long time.
Is your 6 volter still positive ground?
If so, when you jump from a 12 volt, jump directly to the starter NOT up at battery.
Take negative from car and put on starter post, take positive from car and ground to tractor chassis. -Of course with the key on-
Should turn over REAL fast, if it doesn't fire take cable off and wait a while.
Sounds like your battery doesn't have enough "umph" to throw starter drive out into flywheel. Try 00 (real fat) battery cables and move ground from back of dash to bolt that mounts starter to tractor. Wirebrush all connections clean and shiney.
