I NEED HELP. I HAVEW A 53 TO30 6 VOLT SYSTEM. I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS FOR WHILE NOW WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING ROUGH. HAD A DELCO REMY DISTRIBUTER WHICH WAS REALLY WORE OUT. I PURCHASED A REPLACEMENT DISTRIBUTER FROM THIS SITE PART NUMBER 182852M91-TP I INSTALLED NEW DISTRIBUTER ALONG WITH NEW PLUGS, POINTS,CONDENSER,ROTOR. I ROUGHED TIMED IT AND IT RAN GREAT FOR 3 DAYS. THAN IT STARTING BACK FIRING REALLY BAD.CHECKED THE POINTS WAS GETTING A INTERMITTENT SPARK. REPLACED POINTS BUT SAME THING. ONE QUESTION IS WHEN YOU ROUGH TIME IT DO YOU PUT #1 CYLINDER AT TDC MEANING PISTON ALL THE WAY UP TO TOP? ONE SHOP MANUEL AYS TO SET FLYWHEEL AT 32 DEGREES BUT TRYED THAT DIDNT WORK. I EVEN TRYED TO PUT OLD DISTRIBUTER BACK IN. NO HELP. I CANT FIGURE OUT WHY IT WOULD RUN GREAT FOR 3 DAYS THAN STOP. I EVEN WENT OUT AND BOUGHT ANOTHER SET OF PLUGS. SOMEONE TOLD ME THE PLUGS WERENT BURNING THE GAS OFF FAST ENOUGH. I HOPE SOME CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM EXPLAINING AND CAN HELP ME. I AM REALLLY FRUSTRATED.

In addition to the great advice from others, maybe I can make two points: could be the coil is causing the points to go bad; it can do that. You might need a new coil. And I like Autolite 3116 plugs. The Champions don"t seem to work as well.

To time:
remove all plugs,
rotate engine (with breakover bar and socket) until you can feel air pushing out of #1 cylinder.
Now look into inspection hole on flywheel and keep rotating until #6 and #7 are near indicator line. (6 degrees before top dead center)
At this spot in the rotation, the rotor should be pointing to where the #1 plug wire enters distributor, AND your points should JUST be opening--if not, leave engine alone-and rotate distributor by hand until points just start to open. Tighten down distributor clamp. This should be darn close..need a gun to get perfect.
Are you sure you have correct plugs and gap?
Make sure new wires are all the way on.
Lastly, being a 6 volter, she will be positive ground.....make sure the (+) wire on coil goes to the side of distributor. Thanks, Mark
Lastly, on 6 volters in general, they are PICKEY PICKEY PICKEY-change battery cables over to 00 guage (Big/fat cables) switch ground from dash to actual bolt on starter. Keep all electrical connections shiney.
Look forward to others input....Mark

you can set gap either way, remeber that gap is "widest opening" of points, so you want to rotate engine (by hand) so that the rounded corners of distributor shaft push points OPEN--then stop at the middle of this rounded part.
Place gap gauge into open points,,should be firm/snug/not sloppy. If too tight or too sloppy, there is a screw that "cams" the points either closer or wider--in order to set according to gap gauge. Make sure to tighten down points mounting screw. AND, place a very small amount of grease on the shaft where it rubs the points as they open and close.
Good Post. Mark
If you didn't have a brand new dist., I would tend to think that a worn older distributor was causing irratic engine. You may try a new condenser, as they can be bad and not function correctly when warm.
Lastly, take brown paper (grocery bag, or cardboard) and pull back and forth between new points to clean them. slightest crap from fingers or shipping can affect points.
Sincerely Mark

The timiing on the TO-30 is 6oBTDC and the point gap is 0.022". Mark has given you some good info on timing but after assuring myself that I am on the compression stroke and the timing mark is lined up at 6oBTDC, I usually put a paper clip in the #1 spark plug boot, hold it near a good ground, turn on the key and loosen the distributor hold down bolt. I rotate the distributor slowly back and forth until I hear the spark snap. At the point where the spark snaps, you are statically timed. You may have to do this a couple of times to get it just right but when you feel you have it right, tighten down th hold down bolt and try a start. You can check your work with a timing light and also check the advance.
I your original post you said you were getting an intermittent spark. Was that spark at the plugs? If so, there is something wrong in the primary ignition circuit and you need to sort that out. Look for loose wires or a bad connection some where.
