My husband wants to try to do something with his Dad's old tractor. First... we need to know what it is !! No serial number is visible but it has a plate with Ferguson name and patents pending - not very readable. On the frame I see these numbers embossed

HF TO 7000 Q

Thanks to all for the guidance.

Yes the air cleaner has a hole in the dash with a half round shield over it.

One shift lever

The transmission cover plate is separate from the steering column.

On the left side of the engine I found these numbers embossed
Z129 A 600

a plate near the distributor had this
Z129 346021

Looks like you have a traditional TO-30 tractor. Everything you stated points to that and is correct for the TO-30.

I think it's a late 1952 or early 1953 TO-30. Assuming that it still has the original engine. Brainier muggs than me can probably narrow it down further if need be. Looks like a 12volt conversion has been done too. Good luck with it.

Forgot to point out, you probably want to get a owners manual and a shop service manual for this tractor. This and other sites have them for around $67.00 for both. You can get the same manuals for around $23.00 if you know where to go. If interested please e-mail me. Out of courtesy I do not post them here.

Charlotte,

This should be fairly easy. From the picture it looks like you have a TE-20, TO-20 or TO-30. It also looks like it has a TO-35 hood on it. To determine here is a checklist of thing to look at.

a) How many shift levers does it have? 1 or 2. Looks like 1, but picture is not 100% clear.

b) Look at engine left side near the bottom, there should be a cast number like Z120 A 600. The number with the Z is what is of interest.

c) Look at transmission cover plate (where the shifter is) is it connected or separate from the steering column?

d) The Serial number is embossed at the top or bottom of the id plate by the steering wheel (probably at the top) with a Dremmel and a wire brush you should be able to clean enough dirt and paint off to read the number. You can also try to do a pencil rubbing to see if it will come out. i.e. put a sheet of paper over the plate and shade in the paper with the side of the pencil lead. If the embossing is hidden it may pop out on the paper as a lighter area.

Report back and we'll nail this down for you. Lotsa help here.

Does the air cleaner have a hole in the dash with a half round shield over it?
Or is there no hole in dash?
Look on left side of engine(as you are sitting on it) right above where the engine and oil pan meet. There should be a a fairly long number cast onto the engine: Z120 ##### Z129 #####
If z120, then you have a TO 20 Fergy z129 TO 30 Fergy.
It is possible that you have an English Fergy..in this case, I will be of zero assistance.
Hope this helps, Mark

Just in front of, and underneath the steering wheel there should be an ID plate. Is that one unreadable?

Look on the side of the motor that isn"t shown in your picture. Is there a plate just to the right of the distributor behind the coil? If so reply with the numbers from it.
