I just received the Sparex fuel tank I ordered from this webiste. When I picked it up, it sounds like there is a marble or something inside. Is this normal? I wanted to assume it was, because it sounds like there is one in my old tank, however I figured I would ask before I got it completely installed and filled it with fuel. Any tips on preventing rust in this new one besides keeping her full at all times? Thanks in advance!

My TO-20 had been untouched for 11 years sitting out in the elements. When I first drained it so much sludge and rust ran out I wondered if I had a tank left. I took a flashlight and looked inside it was covered with sludge and rust. My uncle told me to buy Draino Crystals, removed the tank and put 3 bottles of that in there added some water and rocked it around. Those Draino Crystals stripped everything the sluge and rust, the inside looks new again.

You don"t have to do anything to protect the tank except maybe use the tractor regularly and keep it full of fuel to eliminate water condensing in the tank. Remember your old fuel tank is over 50 years old and probably sat empty in the north 40 in a blackberry patch for twenty years so it got full of water and rusted out. Steel gas tanks are usually made of tern plate steel sheet which resists rust.

The old tanks had a poorly designed baffle that was meant to keep the fuel from sloshing around.
Whoever designed never considered the dynamic loads on the baffle because the baffle attachments broke off and many of the baffles (mine included) are still sliding around in the original tanks. Your new tank should not have anything in it, by design, but it"s possible some bit of manufacturing debris or a nut or bolt maybe rattling around in there. I"d get it out before I installed the tank.

In my TO20 I had a loose baffle in the tank; not sure if it was supposed to be that way or not!!! But I couldn't see where it was hurting anything! Gene

A few weeks back someone on the forum suggested adding 2-cycle oil to the gas. I'm going to do just that in my last tankful before winter.

Tim, to prevent rust on the inside of the tank, I would use a fuel tank lining compound. These compounds are commonly sold on hot rod parts websites, and I'm pretty sure that it is also sold on this website. I personally have never used it, but it seems worth a try. Be sure to follow the instructions exactly, don't fill the tank up or install it on the tractor until the process is complete. You could also try posting messages to other forums to see if anyone else has any ideas.

The "marble" may actually be some sort of desicant agent to prevent rust while the tank is waiting to be sold. I would remove it, I can"t imagine how having any sort of loose foreign object inside the tank would be good for your tractor.

I personally had no marbles in my tank. There are some in my head, but that�s a different story�.. Just turn the tank over and let �em out! My tractor (TO-30) was out in the weather and pretty rusted when I got it, but the tank was fine with not enough rust or corrosion inside to make me want to chance using one of the lining compounds mentioned. I think a little reasonable care (keeping the tank full and the strainer clean) will do a far better job of preventing future problems than gooping up the tank with that stuff.
