Over the summer, I pulled into two shows only to have the thing crank and crank... will not start.

Then for no reason she'll fire right up.

Then this past Saturday, I go to a friend's Daughter's Birthday pary, I'm providing the Hay ride, and half-way through the tractor just sputters out, like I turned her off. I had to finish the ride using the truck to pull the trailer.

We'll I followed Jerry/MT's article on diagonistics. Turns out the key swich is very touchy. If you turn the key all the way... no connection. when you do get connection the vibs off the engine can bounce the key just enough to loose connection. aarrrrrggggg...

I have a new switch and will install this weekend.

Undoubtedly, no starts are something of a common occurence at pulls, but on a hayride? Undoubtedly, those who were on the hayride were friends, family, or fellow churchgoers. Just excruciating. I feel for ya, bro'.

Jeff that sounds like a corallary to Murphy"s Law: When some device fails to function properly, it will always occur at such a time as to maximize the embarassment.

Glad you found the problem and have found the FENA article useful.

I am really wanting to go through the whole process at some point. My Ampmeter have never shown any hint of life. I am pretty sure my battery is not being charged (though I have not put the VOM to it) Genny puts out 7-8 Volts. and I have a mixed Lucus/AC Delco electrical system.

It all works.... but.... I cant resist to make sure it is wired to spec.

Not a bad idea, Jeff. Winter"s comin" on. I like things to work the way they"re supposed to and I like them in OEM configuration because the they"re in conformity with the product service manuals and are easy to troubleshoot.


I have a Ford 4610 that does the heavy lifting on the ranch and the charging system has been screwed up since I bought it. I need to rewire the darn thing but I nevwer find the time so I keep recharging it but the fact that it doesn"t work properly drives me nuts. Maybe I"ll get it done before this winter!
