I just bought this tractor and when I removed the head, I found two cracks in the block. One was between the #1 and #2 cylinder and the 2nd between the #2 and #3 cylinder. I would like to think tha that the new head gasket will prevent these two cracks from being a problem but am I kidding myself? Is this a fatal blow to my engine?

As Jerry said, Head cracks can occur, Not the end. Many cand be weld repaired. Look up a real auto shop and ask.

This is common with Continental engines when overheated. Normally, these cracks usually don"t cause a problem. My original TO-30 had the same cracks you described and I never had a coolant leak problem. If the cracks propagate downward toward where the cylinder lines sit in their o ring seals, then you are likely to have a problem.

Here"s my advise for whatever it"s worth. Check your oil on a regular basis looking for signs of coolant in the crankase oil. Worry about those cracks when you see coolant in the crankcase.
Then you can get a furnace braze block repair and be back in business.
