You didn�t say whether your tractor is running Negative or Positive to Earth??? They were originally Positive Earth but many have been changed to Negative Earth. A generator will run either positive earth or negative earth. 99% of alternators only run negative earth due to the diode rectifier, usually built into the alternator. The Ferguson tractor with original generator is happy to run either positive or negative earth, but some changes may need to be made if you change polarity. To polarise a Generator you attach a length of wire to the large terminal (D) on the Generator and then just gently wipe the other end of the wire on the battery terminal that is NOT earthed � the battery terminal NOT fastened to ground. You should see a small spark - the Generator is now polarised. Be careful not to touch the small (F) field terminal on the generator with the wire or the regulator could be damaged. Start the engine and check the amp meter rises to the (+) positive side, or if not fitted, the red light goes out, as the engine is revved up. If you have an amp meter and it moves to the (-) negative side of the meter, reverse the leads on the back of the amp meter. If your battery is connected positive (+) to earth, the wire from the coil to points in the distributor should be connected to the + (positive) terminal on the coil. If your battery is connected negative (-) to earth, the wire from the coil to points in the distributor should be connected to the - (negative) terminal on the coil.
