TO20 Steering Box Lube

Does anyone know what type of lubicant goes in the steering box? I just put mine back on the tractor after having it apart to clean, paint, etc. Is it just normal 90 weight gear oil? Also, is it supposed to be filled to the bottom of the fill port below the steering wheel shaft? I think that"s higher than the arms that connect to the drag link. I"d like to keep it below them to prevent leaks.

For the UK built tractors they always said to use engine oil, but the transmission oil is slightly thicker which could help. For really badly worn steering boxes use grease mixed with some thick oil just to make sure that there are no "dry" spots left when the mechanism has moved around a few times.If is is allowed to operate with dry spots it will wear even faster. Some day you will need to bite the bullet and change the seals and bushes but by that time you may find it also needs the sectors, drop arms and main shaft too.

I used GL1 in mine, but the manual called for "nearly a quart." which I put in mine. That's nearly twice as much as you guys are mentioning. A quart did not fill to the level of the lower steering column bearing, or just so...it's hard to see how the upper bronze bushings in the box would get any lube with less?

The Tractor manual says to use 2 pints of Transmission oil... The 90 weight gear lube. 30 wt engine oil will work too.

i have heard engine oil--I have heard hydraulic oil---Don't know that it is that important.
I have switched to "john deere" corn head grease....it is very soft, yet, thick enough to not seep through any seal leaks.

Thanks, I also just ran across a post for the same question on a TO35 to which the reply was 2 pints of transmission fluid. What I drained out was red like transmission fluid. But, frankly, I like the idea of something thicker as you suggest. I should probably buy the owners manual and see what it says.

John, myself and John(UK) had this discussion awhile back about my TO-35. He advised me to use either GL-1 90w gear oil(the same thing your transmission takes) or SAE 30 engine oil. Don't use GL-5 80w90, it has additives in it that are not good for the bushings in the gear box.
