I installed a new manifold and my tractor is now overheating. I flushed and refilled the radiator. No avail. What else might it be?

You say you fitted a new Manifold and it has started to overheat, check the gaskets are not leaking where it attaches to the Head and where the Carb attaches to the manifold. You should always use new gaskets when doing that. If you did use new gaskets, remove the manifold and check that the mounting flanges are perfectly flat and not warped or they will be drawing air and that will make it overheat...John

I"m assuming you had your thermostat out, or the top radiator hose off. IIf that"s the case, sounds like you installed your thermostat in backwards. The thermo is directional and only works when installed with the "working end" installed towards the engine block. If installed backwards, your TO will overheat in about 5 minutes. Pull your thermo & check the side, it should have a directional arrow stamped on the side, the arrow points towards the radiator.

I did not have the thermostat out. Have since picked up a new one to install this week just in case.

We need some more information here. What type of tractor with what engine are you working on? How hot was the trctor running before you put the new manifold on? By "overheating" do you mean the radiator is actually steaming, or is the gauge merely reading high? Is the "new" manifold actually new, or is it a salvage unit? I think you may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Your new manifold may have a crack in it, or there is an imperfect gasket seal from the manifold to cylinder head or manifold to carb. I hope you remembered to fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of new green antifreeze and water, this will save you from big problems both now and later.

1954 TO30 w/ Continental Z129.

The manifold is brand new. The temperature gauge is reading "Hot". I have not kept the machine running long enough to have steam blow out the radiator.

The temperature gauge did not run "Hot" before.

I agree with Gshadel and Jims180 that the thermostat and capilary tube ought to be checked. I would also try squirting some brake cleaner around the gasket connections on the manifold to check for vacuum leaks. If there is a vacuum leak, the leak will draw the cleaner in and change the sound of the engine via richening the mixture. Be careful when you do this, as brake cleaner is quite flammable. Keep us updated!!

IS IT running hot? Could be possible you damanged the capilary tube on the gauge while replaceing the manifold.I think I would check water temp with a thermometer to make you gauge is working. Just my thoughts. Good luck,Jim

Did you clean out the radiator core by flushing forward (from the engine side)with a strong hose? You will be amazed at the number of farm tractor radiator cores that are blocked.

Overheating can also be caused by a lean mixture and incorrect ignition timing.
