I have a TEA 20 -1952. I have not used it much for the past couple of years. It has not run well. I have not run the tractor for ~ a year. I can not get it to start right now. I think it is fuel related. I changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, coil recently. It did not help. I drained all the fuel and put in fresh, but it did not help. I get an occasional backfire, but does not start. I also sprayed starting fluid in the intake, but did not even get a sputter. I checked for a spark using an inductive timing light. It seemed to be firing OK. Does anyone have any ideas about what else to try? Thanks in advance.

If you are timing to #1 cylinder, you need to get the #1 piston on the compression stroke, then align the timing mark and where the rotor is pointing should be the location of the #1 plug wire. The "normal" position is about 10-11 o'clock, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE. If you take the distributor out or rotate it and lose the timing the timing, you have to find it again as a direccted above.
When you get it approximately right, turn on the key, put a paper clip in the #1 plug boot,hold it near a good ground, turn on the ignition and slightly rotate the distributor back and forth until you hear the spark snap. At that point you are statically timed. Tightenen down the distributor and try a start.

I cleaned the carburator. I did not see any pluggage. I cleaned the points and reset the gap. I am getting a good spark now, but all I get is a lot of backfiring when I crank the tractor. I am wondering about the firing order. I have it set for a 1342 order with the #1 in the 4:00 position if you are standing on the left side of the tractor. Is that right?

I took off the carburator and cleaned it. I don't think there was any blockage in the jets. I sanded the points. I am getting a good spark now. Now I get a lot of backfiring out the intake. I am wndering if I have a firing order problem. I have it set for a 1342 order with the #1 position being at 4:00 as you look at the distributor from the left side of the tractor.

No #1 should be about at 10 o'clock, or the one closest to spark plug #1.
1342 is correct but pay attention to the direction the rotor rotates; it is counterclockwise I believe which can fool you.

Check the spark by pull the centerwire out of the distributor and hold it near a good ground and try to start it. You should have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. An inductive light will flash with a weak spark. If you have a weak spark go through the primary ignition circuit, check the points for corrosion or pitting and correct gap. The Standard engine as a chain drive timing system which is often worn so the timing might be off somewhat.

If the tractor sat for a year with old Fuel have you checked/ cleaned the carborator to make sure the ports are not clogged with varnish?
